Yes, I was doing a GPS 103 on that hideous road to Geelong, the Tesla I suppose about 95. The gaggle of cars ahead had already passed the Tesla, it wasn't catching anyone. Two mainlanders in the front.

Did you read the bit where Hertz (USA by the way) had limited the torque and power in an effort to curb front end collisions? LOL! I don't think its the cars that are the problem...

All these articles about the doom and gloom and issues and cost of EV's, yet I've never met a Tesla owner who doesn't LOVE their car. They've all found it to be significantly less expensive to operate and maintain, and none of them are going back to ICE. Number one thing I hear above all, is that they love never needing to go to a gas station. Charging at home, they can start every day with a full tank. They have more "range anxiety" with their ICE's (e.g. late to get an appointment but need to stop for gas).

Can't charge at home, or constantly doing very long trips -- EV is not a good option, but otherwise the only place I've heard any complaints is from people who don't own them. I'm not a fan of Tesla personally -- can't stand the golf cart front ends or the golf cart dash board and single computer screen interface. That said, the insane maintenance of overly complex modern ICE's has me thinking EV for my next daily driver.

No doubt electric cars will be more sensible in the future with better R& D and improvement of charging infrastructure..
It is simpler with less 'bits' in comparison with ICE car..

However just don't promote it as though it is greener when it is not..
more precious metal/ mining needed and environmentally more damaging..

That might just be the normal human response justifying a purchase AND/OR they're cult members :)

No, my boss has had his 3 years now and only 1 unscheduled issue - mice ate his wiring harness! Other than that, annual service and tyres is it.
No petrol station stops and very little servicing is the big winner for him. Not really interested in cars per se, just wants best time saver...

I've had four friends replace an ICE daily driver with a Tesla. They were early adopters. Their reason for the electric car purchase was nothing to do with the environment, rather, they wanted something with the torque characteristics of an electric engine and quieter running. All four vehicles were driven around town however one did a few interstate trips with his. They were able to be charged at home, in a garage.

Of those four, only one still has it, the other three have returned to internal combustion engines. The reason was simply the poor after sales service from Tesla, and the savage depreciation. One was locked out of his car for 7 weeks whilst some mystical part was delivered from overseas. There were also instances of unreliable software upgrades and electronic glitches. However I suspect these were probably no worse than a new equivalent ICE vehicle.

The relentless politicisation of actually buying something that somehow translates into being good for the environment is simply insane. I've found it impossible to disseminate the plethora of government funded studies that accurately calculate the impact an ICE car and its electric equivalent has upon anything. If such a paper exists, please steer me in the right direction.

The only thing you can buy that's good for the environment would be a firearm, and rid the world of your "carbon" footprint.

Well obviously, it's the driver, unless there's a defect in the Tesla braking system, which would be unlikely.

But that wasn't the issue for Hertz. The issue was the substantial repair costs for front end collisions of electric vehicles. It's one of the reasons they are very expensive to insure.

This is a legit issue. One of the guys who will talk for hours about how much he loves his Tesla had an accident with his Model S. He said "between Geico and Tesla it took 7 weeks to get it back" (he wasn't sure who was more at fault). I asked him, given that experience, would he buy a Tesla again and he said -- I already did, I kept that Model S and bought another Model X for my wife. The repair time/cost is likely a very real issue, but he wasn't even slightly dissuaded about never going back to ICE. His main reason by far is never having to go to the gas station (which is the opposite of "range anxiety" that is talked about constantly among (primarily) people who have never owned an EV).

Weird, isn't it? Fuel is probably the least expensive part of owning a car, and takes, what, 5 minutes a week? Depreciation is the most costly - wait until your mate tries to sell, especially a "stories" Tesla...

Yeah, I just don’t buy this not having to go to the gas station thing, I reckon it’s just another way to justify the purchase. I do 40k km per year in my Volvo (diesel) and fill up once a week on my way back from a supermarket shop. 5 min pit stop as you say, big deal. On the other hand, you’re more likely to get shot at a gas station in the US :D
