Haven't posted in a long time since i have nothing new to post.

Opened mom's safe deposit box yesterday and dad's watch was in there. Dad passwd in 1977, so it hasn't been worn in at least 45 years. It definitely needs a service, but it is keeping good time. There was also a 14k Elgin pocketwatch.

Trying on watches, with my friend

I ask to try on this watch without asking the price.

The salesperson tells me the price, I don’t believe him.

My friend says, that is the real price.

I say, get this thing off me immediately.

    That is gorgeous! Well done!

How does one go about building their own watch?

With a steady hand and great eyesight! For fun, you could get a kit from here. https://shop.diywatch.club/ However, on Tom's level, you would need to source cases, backs, crystals, movements...

    Thanks!

I've always been interested in watches - my Dad started me off on this when I was very young. I got my first Rolex at 19, when I graduated Culinary School - still have it to this day - box, papers and sales receipt. so i just slowly collected watches ever since. having about 40 plus watches and a lot of the "cool" ones and reading about them, I became more interested in how they work. Then I inherited my Father in laws Omega - which is not a pretty watch, but it was a non runner... I can't stand when things don't work, so i figured this is a great opportunity to see how watches work. Enter YouTube - Wristwatch Revival - great videos, and then over to Watchfix.com where you can learn how they work and fix them. About a year ago, I decided that I know enough now on how to take a basic movement apart, service it and put it back and it still works I bought a DIY watch kit -built the watch and then from then on it was how to make my own brand. Actually building the watch is pretty easy... ( to a degree) getting the parts very easy, as long as you use standard Seiko, Miyota, or ETA movements ... the next step is Hi Horology - which requires skills I do not possess - or tools either. brands like Patek that Hand finish all the gears, and pinions chamfer the edges etc... and use precious metal are artisan skills - on top of real engineering. My goal is to have a micro brand that I get to make watches I like - and if others buy them - Great!

There are alot of places you can source the parts, and all you really need is to understand the movement - movement holder or chapter rings, and hand sizes. if you build your own movement then you are really getting in to engineering...that is super hard, and you need CAD and all that.... Or if you come up with the drawings there are companies that can make your creation come alive... but it takes $$$$$. My next project I think is going to be in white gold - with an ETA Chrono movement - with a couple of mods on it... I'm working on the dial now... there will be case engraving as well...
