I'm not a huge fan of the wheel options for the 296, other than the carbon wheels that I'm not keen to take the risk on (very expensive to replace, can they even be repaired if they get damaged?).
Is it possible to specify other Ferrari OEM wheels, such as those on the SF90 that I prefer, without upsetting anyone at Ferrari?

As I know you can't repair the carbon fiber wheels. Because the wheel is under enormeous presure it is a risk driving with a damaged CF wheel. It could break without a warning (like my carbon fibre bike after a smaller accident).

A minor scratch would not be a problem, but if you hit the edge of a walkway nobody can tell you, if there is a damage. In Germany my dealer told me a replacement of one wheel would be around 8-9 k.

But I also love the optics of the wheel, too.

BTW: If you look the internet you can find old spy photos of the 296 you can see, that those sometimes had the Tributo wheels. You need to check that. My experience is that the wheel of the last or younger generation might technically fit, but Ferrari won't sell them and tell you it will be a warranty issue if you use those (on your own risk).

Thanks for taking the time to reply. That's what I expected really.

I just need to work through the decision of the diamond cut wheels or taking the plunge for the carbon ones, before I firm up my spec....

What would your car look like ? Body color ?

My "experience" through the last year of waiting is, that I am confused with the side-optics of the car. If you choose colored calipers and look closely you find out that the front caliper looks much bigger than before, just because there are parts, that were black before even if you chose yellow or red and now they are boldly colored. Then the forged wheels are in some kind bicolor. So from the side you have (in my design-opinion) too large colored calipers and a fuzzy bicolor optic concerning the wheels. Worsend by the Ferrari badge (with yellow mismatch to the rest in yellow) and body color.

You could try to "harmonize" this in taking black calipers an maybe you think about black or carbon fiber centre caps. I found that I like the wheels much more with this "quiet" optic, because the CF wheels mostly have back calipers and often CF centre caps, so you imitate the plain look of the expensive CF wheels. Maybe you give this a try in the configurator and blacken the centre caps afterwards in photoshop to get the idea.

It's my first brand new Ferrari so I'm going with RC for colour. I like your ideas about the black calipers and CF wheel inserts. I don't like black wheels so am leaning towards the Matt finish diamond cut wheels right now. I'll have to decide quite soon. I haven't spec'd any exterior CF so maybe I just bite the bullet and get the wheels I like? (these cars are very expensive in Australia). Maybe I order a 5th CF wheel when I order so I have a spare, might give me some peace of mind.

The front and rear wheels are different sizes so having a spare might not be worth it in the event you damage one that is a different size to your spare. You can have either the standard cast or optional forged wheels painted in various different colours at the factory if that makes a difference to you. That is option code RIMM for a matt finish, RIMP for a gloss finish and RIMB for a bicolour finish. There are various shades of grey, bronze and gold available.

Good point about the wheel size, thanks.

I don't think the carbon wheel option is looking likely, I don't think it's practical for me.

I don't mind the matt grey diamond cut wheels, I think that's where I'll end up, I just don't think they're as striking as the F8 wheels or the SF90 wheels. Maybe they'll grow on me. I'm not sure a colour option will change my views on the design of the wheels, but it's an idea to consider for sure.

Get the standard wheel, then upgrade to an HRE or ANRKY wheel in a larger size. Ferrari has a HUGE wheel gap and it needs to be filled to look correct.

Haha, thanks for the suggestion but I'll be settling for an OEM wheel.

I just played a little to show you, how the standard wheel could look like when in standard grigio corsa matte or darker in Canna di fucile (glossy) with CF center caps.

I know, very poor skills in image postprocessing ;)

Canna di fucile comes very close to the look of carbon fibre.

I found this homepage, maybe it could help. Check the differences (none ?!) between F8 Tributo and 296GTB/GTS:

    https://tirewheelguide.com/sizes/ferrari/f8-tributo/2022/#Ferrari-F8-Tributo-2019-2023

    https://tirewheelguide.com/sizes/ferrari/296-gtb/2022/#Ferrari-296-GTB-2022-2023

Maybe you find a way to try the F8 wheels in down under somehow. If your legal restriction are less than here (sometimes very nasty in Germany) then you could take the cheapest wheels for the 296 and buy Tributo wheels afterwards. For the upgrade price of the forged 296 wheels you will for sure get the OEM Tributo wheels somewhere.

Exactly my plan. Want to keep the same rolling diameter, though.

I’ve done that with all of my Ferraris. Strasse wheels and now ANRKY. They look so much better than any of the stock wheel options.

Plus, when I sell or trade my cars in, the stock wheels and tires are in perfect condition since they've essentially never been used!

I like these wheels. But be careful, that is just an illustration how they would look like, it is not the proof that they fit because this photo is photoshopped. Just take a look at the calipers, front and rear are exactly the same size, but in reality the rear calipers are much smaller.
