Was thinking the EXACT same thing as that Speedster went through the auction.

The Speedster purchase was one of those head scratchers … obviously someone impulse buying or suuuuuuper drunk..
But it happens more often than one would think, and that’s what keeps sellers willing to use this format.
Sort of how seeing someone win at craps every once in a while makes other gamblers come back to a casino.

The TDF is a case study of how these outfits make money. The seller got less than market value, the buyer paid more than market value, both handing out their money to the only party that came out a winner being BJ to the tune of around $200k. And these fees were paid for nothing cause BJ didn’t serve either party.

My observation is that unless you’re an outlier like that Speedster which is what keeps people baited, auctions like BJ/Mecum are way more often than not terrible financial decisions for both buyers and sellers relative to other ways they could achieve the same transaction.

Agree i always find that the best financial outcome is consignment to a reputable dealer AND price the car right

That does not seem bad in comparison to what the Chiron went for - not sure if it's a poor example, but seems like 20-25% below the market rate

You typically say a car is worth what someone paid. In this case it appears someone paid approx 1.3m for a tdf. Bought at auction, as-is. Certainly the car is deserving of all the accolades, but, I'd call this a strong result considering the troubled state of the world.

Car auctions are like law suits. Only the auction house "wins," same as only the attorney "wins." Everyone else loses.

there might be some collection dynamics here, which will still have a positive effect on the market with low supply. this is one of the few Ferraris and especially cars over the last 10 years that is a true keeper "collectible". Most of these TDF's will sit in 20-50 car collections not transacting on the market except rarely.

Oh, got so carried away with photos I didn't even read that part. It says "detuned" to 15mph but let's be honest it's probably a software lock, I would love to see somebody hack it and track that. Guess Ferrari wouldn't provide such services and wipe anybody off the list who dares to try but it's 2 am where I live so I have the right to dream.

It seems there is only one tdf left for sale in the USA. Colour grigio silverstone. Market picking up?

This does not surprise me, personally I think the TDF IS THE CAR TO BUY.

I totally agree I’m very surprised still to see such a price disparity between the Tdf and the Competizione I would think the Tdf should be much closer in price and greater in terms of desirability!

Interesting dynamics in the UK not too long ago there were 7 tdf for sale including 2 imported cars ( Hong Kong supplied which most collectors would not consider due to provenance).
There are now only 2 tdf left for sale, the 2 import cars and ZERO UK supplied tdf left for sale.
At the same time there are 4 812 Comp, 5 LaFerrari and 3 458SA for sale making the tdf clearly the rarer available for sale among those models in the UK
Collectors finally coming to the realisation that the tdf IS the better car and THE car to collect.
Prices should now start rising again clearly given the total lack of UK supplied cars in the market hence I predict a narrowing spread between the Tdf and 812 Comp in the not too distant future

At least in the USA, relying on "listed inventory" for a TdF may not be the most reliable gauge of supply.

For instance, Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale, I have been told by my SA, has 3 TdFs for sale but they do not list such cars online...same for F40, F50, etc..

The strength of the economy in the USA doesn’t seem as strong as the media and statistics seem to imply…only means one things the Fed will cut rates sooner than people think. That’s all it takes for things to pick up..expectations

The US economy is ONLY hanging in due to deficit spending, IMO. A cynic may even conclude election year politics is the motivation for fiscal stimulus.

I doubt a 25 or 50 basis point rate cut is what a potential TdF buyer is waiting for. In fact, I would speculate the current rate environment is a net positive to the typical TdF buyer as their passive cash can easily earn 4%+ in a money market account.

The size of the Fed's balance sheet is now the tail that wags the dog, IMO.

    Agreed re-fiscal stimulus/dominance
In my opinion something is going to break soon and eventually that fed balance sheet will expand an order of magnitude larger than what they did during covid..why? To keep the treasury bond market functioning/liquid. We saw how abysmal the latest bond auctions were. Eventually they will have to inject liquidity and weaken the usd ( which they probably already started doing looking at bond yields today given last week auctions + jpy intervention).

Agree with what you wrote. The US has gone too far down the rabbit hole with fiscal stimulus/debt in an effort to never have a recession again.

QE is the ONLY thing keeping this sh*t show from collapsing...or as you said...breaking.

Dollar strength will ultimately give way to weakness which, IMO, will ensure a stagflationary environment.

Treasury will have to auction ~$11 trillion in maturing debt in fiscal 2025. Most of this debt will be short term duration as Treasury is having difficulty moving sizeable $$$ amounts beyond 7 years.

To get this conversation back on topic...it will be interesting how the TdF market performs in an environment where the US $$$ may be weakening in, potentially, a rapid fashion as growth is, again...potentially, stagnant.
