what does F1 gain from Williams, Haas, Alpine, Visa Cash App RB, or Stake Sauber Audi Romeo? that's half the grid! only one has a bespoke engine. Haas doesn't even have their own chassis (built by 3rd party contractor, Dallara) those 5 teams combined to score 200 points in 2024...roughly the same number as Sainz! Andretti is one of the few truly globally recognized names in motorsport GM is a bigger company than any manufacturer currently on the grid (Ford and VW incoming, sure)
Dumb, dumb move. Cadillac made a new Hypercar and win the series. You are saying they won’t be competitive? How about let them try, you greedy ****
it's 100% the right question half the grid provide zero value to the sport. you could argue they have negative value (i.e. draining resources) if F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport every team should be beating the **** out of each other to perform. it's not anywhere close to that. everything I've seen is Andretti and GM wanting to be there to win. maybe not year one, but as quickly as possible. you cannot say that about any of those 5 teams.
Which prospective European teams with the sporting stature and the level of preparation of Andretti have been turned down? I think Liberty would say it’s a global company with an American base, but that’s splitting hairs. Still, I haven’t noticed them lobbying strongly one way or the other.
F1 deserves another 3 or 4 years of RB/Verstappen domination. Thank God Ferrari (amongst other brands) are betting on endurance championships.
The F1G statement contains many valid points. Regrettably, I find the tone unnecessarily snotty. One point I take exception to is the idea that only a competitive team can add value in terms of fan, media, and sponsor interest. I see this as a 'straw man', considering no new team can be competitive from day one. My view is that the saga of an all-new team climbing the F1 mountain would be compelling and have a clear positive impact, including in the US market where underdog stories play as well as anywhere else.
F1 is a club of 10 teams. Each team entered when there was an opportunity, not by bullying others. Andretti wanted to force his way into that club, but bad-mouthed its members, and got black-balled. His attitude of entitlement backfired on him, IMO.
F1 is the pinnacle of racertainment. Don't forget that NFL's Roger Goodell was in Canada for the GP to tell F1 that parity makes money, not winning.
Hitech and Carlin had both submitted entries that were rejected pretty quickly. neither had a top 5 global car manufacturer attached two teams have traded the last 15 championships. F1 is very stagnant from a performance standpoint
I don't recall, but the last time, the FIA examined 3 applications, including Andretti. Andretti was selected because of their notoriety but failed the second interview with Liberty.
From the statement: “The most significant way in which a new entrant would bring value is by being competitive. We do not believe the applicant would be a competitive participant.” Based upon what evidence? Compared to what? So which is it about: money or competition?
Of course it's about money, but it would be rude to put it like that. So FOM (Liberty) wrapped their answer in a convoluted argument. Andretti wasn't wanted by most of the paddock; that's the bottom line.
Here's the reasons for rejecting Andretti's F1 entrance.....believe what you will. There's always 2028. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So Liberty want's to open F1 tracks in the United States but won't let another American F1 team join......makes sense.
Pure fear on the part of F1 and its closed club of 10 teams. The bottom five teams live off the leavings of the top five. They have no motivation to ever try harder, they are just freeloaders. But the top five teams protect them so that they only have to give a semblance of competition amongst themselves. For all intents and purposes, F1 is now just spec racing with lots of glitz and bling to hide that truth. Inflated team values are purely a product of overall inflation and not of real value...inflated ticket prices, inflated number of races, inflated specticle (instead of real competition). F1 is now the Tayler Swift of motorsports.
FIA (Mohamed Bin Sulayem) 0 - 1 FOM Liberty (Stefano Domenicali) Andretti could be the victim of a tug of war between the Federation and the commercial rights holder. MBS has been somehow clumsy since his nomibnation, notably treading on Libert's toes.
100% based on the current 10 teams being greedy about splitting up the total money dispersed. I for one think the Andretti's are lucky to be rejected. The trash that F1 is now isn't worth trying to be part of.
You could be right. There is too much uncertainty ahead to join the series. Starting from scratch, there would be a lot of effort and investment needed just to be competitive after 5 or 6 years. There is no idea in which direction the FIA and Liberty will take F1 by then.
I doubt they would ever be allowed to be competitive. Mercedes, RBR, Ferrari, Mclaren and now AMR have way too much power. Mid field success and maybe even some podiums, maybe a couple poles or even a win here and there. But to fight for the championship... no way. In the next 5 years, we will likely see the same top 5 teams fighting for wins every week. Assuming it isn't just a battle between 1 or 2 like it has been for more than a decade.
With the budget cap and the limit on development, only 2 or 3 teams, at most, will get the right package at the beginning of each season, and the others will be unable to catch up. I predict there will be a lot of losers, even among the big names, and in the long run some manufacturers will withdraw, probably.
Andretti were invited by FOM and did not appear in person to present their case lol. Why should F1 bother. Andretti are arrogantly assuming Ben Sulayem would ensure their inclusion? My word but bad form is an understatement lol. No loss if Andretti doesn’t even show in person. Sorry but the whinging around here about this is laughable lol. 4. Having had the opportunity to consider the Applicant’s responses together with our own deliberations, we subsequently wrote to the Applicant on 12 December 2023 extending an invitation to an in-person meeting at our offices in order for the Applicant to present its application, but the Applicant did not take us up on this offer.
Why show up to a kangaroo court? The only thing arrogant in this dynamic is F1. Forget the top 5 team, only 3 teams have regularly won races in the past 15 years. While there's nothing wrong with that, what is a disgrace is the fact that the bottom 7 teams actually have the audacity to talk about "competitiveness". I'm sorry, when is the last time Renault won race? How about Williams? ? Sauber? How the boys at Haas doing? Garbage. All of them. They haven't performed worth a flip in decades. They're either ridding off of glory from decades ago, or in the case of teams like Sauber, haven't won in their entire existence. They add value to F1? Um, they don't. There's simply a sugar high of fad fans in F1 right now, and the other 14 cars are "also rans", who happen to be in an economic environment that rewards losers. If it's about money, say it's about money. F1 should at least be honest and say that the "also rans" are just about the money, even at the cost of better racing..
