355 Gearbox / Driveshaft Leak?

    I pulled out the driveshaft today to rebuild the CV, and as soon as the driveshaft came out, a LOT of greenish oil came pouring out the gearbox driveshaft housing... It smells like gear oil to me, and has a greenish tint to it...

    I have not drained the gearbox before pulling the motor (not sure what I was thinking), but now - can I replace the seal behind the CV flange if the gearbox still has oil in it?

    Any other recommended seals/bearings to be checked while "I am in there" ?

    Secondly, when I pulled the hub off, I noticed some orange/red grease around the bearing (last picture). Is this a leaking bearing, or is this grease applied during installation?

    That oil is not leaking past the seal, it is leaking past the splines and retaining bolt/washer.

    Brian - Im sorry, I didn't quite understand... You mean this oil leaked from the CV side, past the splines and into the cavity? So this 'oil' is from the CV grease that was previously in the CVboot?

    How can that happen? The end of the CV has a cover. Besides the CV is full of grease, not oil.

    Is that just a matter of using a thread sealer? Or could it be indication of that bolt loosening up?

    Never seen one get loose but I have seen lots leak.

    People ignore how the factory did it thinking it was some hack using lots of sealant because he didn't know better. In reality a big fingerfull needs to be smeared in to fill the splines and a bunch needs to be gooped on the shank of the bolt.
