I don't generally buy Top Gear magazine (which is a UK monthly, loosely connected to the TV show of the same name) but luckily they periodically produce special editions with all the good (i.e. Ferrari) bits. This is the latest which I picked up today.

Thank you. The only article that really holds interest for me is the one about Maranello, but at just two pages I imagine it isn’t especially comprehensive.

I have started to see OCTANE issues again arriving, and I know they are working on their subscription problems- they DO answer emails and it's clear they are trying to improve sub fulfillment.

Let’s hope they let Octane be Octane and not make it Magneto’s kid brother. Sometimes Magneto seems obsessed with style over content….like a slightly less pretentious The Road Rat.

    Marcel,

It’s for January, 2024. I did receive the issue earlier than usual, especially considering the typically chaotic Christmas mail.

I communicated with James Elliott recently and he was very relieved about the buyout.

With this insert you are seeing immediate action on making sure distribution is the way it should be. It was clear the ex owners of Octane were not up to snuff.
As a writer I have nothing to do with all this but all the same would rather it be solved and this is a great sign.

I have this one as well, its just a compendium of previous articles... Top Gear is written for 16 year olds... and the articles are pretty thin..... But I'm a sucker for mags. that scream Ferrari on them.

That is a problem with a lot of publications nowadays. Sadly this is the effect of less people buying magazine, advertisers retreating, editorial budgets shrinking, quality going down, which results in less people buying magazines, etc...

Not a single one of these magazines are available in Switzerland, where I live. None. On any of the few newstands left in our county. And if you subscribe you get perhaps 50 percent of the ones you have paid for, and I haven't even mentioned Octane, that simply doesn't deliver at all nor do they reply to mails. All these mags make it so extremeley difficult to find and to buy, no wonder go they bankrupt. All are totally unprofessional. What a shame. So bad.

I know Marcel, but sadly this industry is in decline, as sad as it is. Reading is not the most popular way of collecting information anymore. People rather sit down and have information spoon-fed to them. The norm these days is to get the highest possible reward with the lowest possible input. Books -> newspapers -> magazines -> television -> YouTube -> YouTube shorts -> Instagram -> catheter?

That is why magazines disappeared from news stands and news stands are next to disappear. This could be counteracted by setting up a solid online system with 1-to1 deliveries to customers, but THAT is where it all goes wrong.

I'm not saying that huge buy-outs, aggressive mergers, stock prices and shareholders are the problem (oops, but I probably did...) but I know most publishers could be 100% more effective by paying just 10% less dividend...

    Just my two cents

Unless they publish Harry Potter, publishers aren’t able to pay any dividends.

When I read that Luca di Montezemolo had granted one of his very rare interviews to Cavallino Magazine, I instantly ordered a copy (no. 259), because it was said as well that this interview would unveil many interesting new information. Now that I read it I am totally disappointed about the very poor quality of the text and the considerable journalistic shortcomings of the interview. How on earth can a man like Antonio Ghini produce such a poor text?!

The so-called interview, which isn't a real interview but a 7-page self-glorifying, self-branding eulogy by Montezemolo himself, barely commented by Ghini, does not unveil anything new. Moreover, Ghini keeps quoting Montezemolo's remarks from the past, so why making an interview by quoting old stuff?

Moreover, nobody seems to have recognised that five identical lines of text are repeated immediately. And while it is said that 25 million people visit Italy each year, just a few lines later, it's 23 million people. And, ups, it hasn't been recognised that the graphic layout designer chose the wrong front for a few lines.

What a terribly missed opportunitey to produce a good piece on Montezemolo ...
