Faulty baby smart sensor in passenger seat

While going on a drive with a passenger in my 458 spider whenever we would hit a dip in the road that would compress the suspension and then have it go light there would be a chime and the dash would show a message saying passenger airbag. It happened several times during the drive. Took the car to the dealer and after inspection the code was for the passenger seat baby smart module. They came back saying that because the car has the carbon buckets, they are not able to simply order the module and need to order a full replacement seat at a cost of $30,000!

this sounds insane. Is there no way to deactivate this or find some other solution?

 

Thank you so much. I read The link you sent. Just to clarify, your car had the carbon seats and you ordered the part and replaced it, cleared the code, and everything was good to go?

 

Awesome, thank you so much. One last question: did you install the sensor in the seat and remove the bad one or did you just plug the new one in and leave it tucked under the seat?

 

As far as I know, Ferrari have not acknowledged this problem as widespread and issued a specific recall for this. Is there a policy I am not aware of that anything deemed “safety issue“ but not affecting potentially every car as would a manufacturer defect must be corrected under warranty regardless of vehicle age?

If not, then the dealer is just replacing a faulty part as per factory instructions. The dealer isn’t trying to screw me. They are simply following Ferrari protocol. In this case, I think Ferrari made a ****ty design choice never thinking that these sensors could go bad and it would mean replacing the entire carbon bucket at an exorbitant and unnecessary cost.

 

part arrived today. Switching it out early next week. When you taped it to the floor, did you maintain it spread out or did you fold or make it a smaller footprint somehow?

I didn’t mean that including the sensors was the design flaw. Having the seats designed in such a way that this part is not replaceable is the flaw in my opinion. It can be avoided. Even if the seats are outsourced to a supplier, the other seat options available show that it can be designed in a way where this part is replaceable. so again, poor designed decision

 

it’s easily replaceable, even through the dealership in the standard bucket seats. And there is no airbag liability issue with those seats.

so clearly it can be done if they had taken it into consideration for the carbon race seats. But if the dealer won’t even sell you the part or perform the service because Ferrari doesn’t allow it, how is that considered “easily replaceable“?

so was finally going to connect the new sensor under the seat and the actual connectors are different from what is there already. See photos. Any idea what to do now?
