Just received the first, 1965, book. I haven't gotten too far into it, but from the pages I've look at, it is really, really good. George
This one is for Jack the Lad in the first place, and then for the rest of us: Email from Philip Porter: I am very proud to announce that we are now working with Luigi Chinetti Jr and Doug Nye to create the first of three planned books detailing the incredible story of Enzo Ferrari’s long-time friend and United States-market importer Luigi Chinetti Sr, and the activities of his legendary North American Racing Team (NART). Doug states, ‘This is the rags-to-riches story of an Italian immigrant in the USA, making a uniquely indelible mark within the American racing world - initially at Indianapolis - and who became its most effective and famous bridge to Europe in general, and to the Ferrari factory in particular. ‘Luigi Chinetti Sr built his burgeoning reputation as a racing driver upon his two outright Le Mans 24-Hour race victories - for Alfa Romeo in 1932 and ’34 - but there was far more to this taciturn and secretive figure. ‘In the chaos of Europe 1946-47, he was the man who persuaded Enzo Ferrari that a ready market awaited his new V12 cars in America. Chinetti helped build the commercial success that funded Ferrari’s unbounded racing ambitions. ‘He had first met Enzo Ferrari when they worked together at Alfa Romeo in the 1920s. In the late 1940s Ferrari appointed Chinetti his American-based importer and agent. Chinetti instantly promoted the brand by scoring his third Le Mans 24-Hours win in 1949, and added another in the Belgian Spa 24-Hours. ‘By the later-1950s Chinetti’s own NART team brought Ferrari fresh world-class laurels. He also introduced to Ferrari such new American star drivers as Phil Hill, Dan Gurney and Richie Ginther. ‘Overall Luigi Sr drove in 12 successive Le Mans races. In 1965 his NART team won the great race with drivers Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt. NART’s star drivers 1958-1982 included Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, and many more. ‘Luigi ‘Coco’ Chinetti Jr, who himself finished fifth for NART at Le Mans in 1971, has long preserved his family’s remarkable archives, as accumulated by Luigi Sr and his American wife Marion. The new Porter Press books will present much of this material for the first time, exposing many real surprises of immense interest to motoring and Ferrari fans worldwide.’ Doug Nye is the world’s leading motorsport historian and a prolific author of authoritative books, including a number on Ferrari. The first volume is planned to be launched 2024-25.
Thanks. I just received the email! I wonder if DCN has finished the much-delayed Ferrari photobiography yet.
So basically it will be a series of three books, the first one to be published in 2024-2025. Vaguely this setup reminds me of a certain series on a Bourne based British F1 team of the fifties to early seventies...
Maybe someone should write a book about writing this book because it seems to go round in circles with different authors and publishers and always something appearing at some point in the future but never actually arriving.
Let's hope Coco does not change his mind... again...with Doug Nye it will be done as well as is feasible.
I am not privy to any of this at all. I feel that while it may be useful to review anything Lynch got done before he passed, the new author would use it as external notes as opposed to chapters to copy paste in. Every author has his way of doing things.
It was my understanding the Michael's wife had the rights to his work? Fred Simeone moved heaven and earth to try to complete this project--some people never finish things. I hope that Doug is successful.
There is that too! Like editors who start mucking with your text BEFORE even reading it, like driving in the dark headlights off. Stupid, arrogant, incompetent, disrespectful and infuriating. Thankfully I haven't had that in quite a few years.
I’d be interested in this book but apparently there is no translation in English. I wonder if the author has taken a cue from the film and dramatized the events.
When I go swimming I like to jump in the deep end. So I picked up these two books and checked them off the list. Glad I did, both of them are A+. Dino Compendium is my idea of what a single model book should look like, the story of a model from beginning to end and everything in between. Inside Track is breathtakingly amazing, it reminds me of epic volumes of old world art or nature photography, printed from a bygone era, something my grandparents would have with other subjects. Though there are a few production quality issues, I can see past them and give this book a score of 10 out of 10. Not sure what will be next on my list. Perhaps a biography or Piloti, che Genti or another single model book like the 64 GTO or the 288 GTO book, or maybe a book on Pinnifarina, though I've been disappointed by the PF books I've purchased in the past. These two books are the types of books I'm looking for. I'll pay top dollar for excellence. Image Unavailable, Please Login
When you are already this high up the ladder, there is basically only one option: ‘Ferrari in Camera’.
You should try to get Volume 3 of Inside Track although I’ve been told finding one can be difficult. It really dies round out the set, though.
For sure. But for now I don't want to climb higher, just stay on this rung for now. There are other solid books I'm eyeing in the $300-$500 range.
Man, Inside Track has really rekindled my passion for great books. Over the last few years I've been let down by books I've purchased and gave up on pursuing great books. Now the passion is fired up again. Thank you @Doug Nye. My list is now: GTO 64 Ferrari GTO (Lewandowski) F50 Factory Brochure Enzo Ferrari (Dal Monte) Piloti, che Genti Il Cavallino nel Cuore (Fioravanti)
According to the third column of this, it will. Apparently, the plan is for a separate publication from the Coco Chinetti/Doug Nye/Porter Press books. https://www.bullpublishing.com/our-story
Unfortunately for me (and maybe others), the only example (more or less) sensibly priced is located in the US with no option for shipping abroad; there are many copies available in Europe, highly priced and not selling for months (years ?).
My local motoring bookseller now has this listed on their website. Seems to be close to being released. PORTER PRESS Ferrari 166/MM 212: Uovo Exceptional Cars #12 by Page, James Code: 62726 Format: Hardback / 128 pages Publication date: 01/02/2024 Availability: Pre Order. Release date: February 2024
