For Sale 1989 328 GTB Turbo - Blu Chiaro / Beige

1 of 308 produced from 1986 to 1989 and the only example in Blu Chiaro, SN ZFFZA27B000079590 was imported into the USA on October 5, 2022 with 20,700 klm (~12,800 miles). Various maintenance receipts, dealer stamps, and registration documents back to new validate the current mileage and care provided the car over its 35 year life. Independent validation of the cars condition was obtained when the car was judged "platinum" at the 2023 Cavallino Classic and the Chattanooga Motorcar Festival.

Its most recent major service was completed at 21,446 klm (~13,300 miles) in February of 2023 by Automotive International of Charlotte. This service included fluids all around the car, all new belts and tensioner bearings, and four new tires. The car has its red book, receiving Classiche certification on January 16th, 2020. Additionally, numerous photographs of this very car are heavily featured in the GTB/GTS turbo chapter of "Ferrari - The Turbo Eight Cylinders" written by Alberto Mantovani.

Officially known as a "GTB turbo", the factory had for years produced 2.0 liter V-8 variants of its 308/328 cars to get around Italian taxation based upon engine displacement. The responsibility of designing the swan song of this model lineup was given to Nicola Materazzi, who was the project leader of the 288 GTO. Indeed, he incorporated many lessons learned on the GTO, changing the turbo over to one produced by Japanese company IHI versus the previous employed German KKK Turbolader. The GTB/GTS turbo also utilized a Behr intercooler and a more sophisticated ignition system with a knock sensor and new waste gate valve driven by exhaust gas pressure, which allows an overboost in the mid rpm ranges. While rated power from the factory was officially 254 bhp, internal factory dyno sheets show as much as 275 bhp. The 2.0 liter turbo officially produces 10% more torque than the 3.2 liter normally aspirated unit and at a lower rpm of 4100 versus 4600. Quoting from Mantovani's book, "the gain in terms of thrust at medium and low rpm is really impressive, so much so that this small 2.0 liter 8 cylinder is capable of significantly overtaking even the 3.2 liter engine of the 328, with an exciting power kick at 3500 rpm that goes on up to 7000 rpm. Truly, it is a little beast:aggressive, powerful, flexible and with a great intake and exhaust sound. I personally consider this unit the best engine ever installed on the 308/328 series, and by far."

This investment grade turbo represents the pinnacle of the 308/328 model line and is significantly quicker than any other 328. While there may be a few naysayers, what I can say is they have probably never driven an example of this model. Everyone who has, gets out of the car with a huge smile and is blown away by how fun the car is to drive. Indeed, I like to call it a mini 288 GTO! Of course, this example comes comes complete with all original books including the warranty card, maintenance records, tool and jack kits, importation papers, red book, etc. and is priced at a fraction of the cost of a 288 GTO at $224,900 obo. @Albert-LP says "propably unique" and you "the only example in Blu Chiaro", do you get any confirm from Classiche or from the factory ?

 

Yes, that's my friend Emilio former car: it was a very nice sample when I saw it some years ago. Probably not the only one on that color, but extremely rare as the whole production was 308 units only in four years. 88-89 models, the "ABS ready' cars with convex wheels are more or less 150. In my opinion the "328" GTB turbo is the most precious, rare and emotional car of the 208-398-328 series

This is the stock exhaust sound: not of that excellent blu sample for sale, but the car is the same, despite this one is an 86-87 model and not an '89 like the blue. It's much louder than the 328 NA standard exhaust sound

Totally love the Euro model 328. Will probably be my next Fcar.

 

As a data point on this: I also own a GTB Turbo. It is an _amazing_ car. If you think a 328 is fun, just wait until you drive the Turbo.

The turbo setup in these is basically 1/2 of the 288 GTO. Same turbo and same intercooler, just one of each instead of two of each.

The boost comes on smoothly and strongly, and while the "on paper" power/torque figures are similar to the 328, the Turbo feels _much_ faster. It's so much fun.

So few people really know about these cars, and even fewer have driven them. If they did, the values of these would be multiples of the 328.

 

I'd consider a GTB Turbo for my next Ferrari. We'll see.

if the 328 has the stock exhaust, this "328" GTB turbo sounds ten times better: I had/have them all (308 carburators wet sump and dry sump, all 328 variants, all 208 turbo and "328" turbo variants) so I know what I'm saying.

I have a GTB turbo as well. Such a great car. I know of two others outside of this thread. Wonder how many are in the states. Assuming less than 10?

 

This car has SOLD! We still have one GTB turbo left, the red one pictured earlier in this thread. It is a 42k klm (26k mile) example that has been freshly serviced and available at 139k obo!

The two liters turbocharged V8 intercooled engine that equipped the "328" GTB turbo was designed by the same Ferrari F1 turbocharger specialist engineer who was 288 and F40 project leader, the legendary Nicola Materazzi. And when you drive it, you have no more doubt about who was that small but very emotional engine father
