We can't be bothered engaging with someone who presents the Guardian, BBC and CBC as reputable sources.

 

There is nothing political about science. I have no interest in the political side of it and have only talked about science. The thread topic is Teslas, and the obvious questions are whether they make sense from an ownership and environmental perspective. You left off "Science" and "Scientific American" and "Fox-Carolina" as invalid sources (there are many more sources saying the same I didn't bother to list, and none I can find that contradict that reporting). You don't have to polite, but if you are going to engage, post the sources you think are valid and that have informed your opinion.

If this was a movie, and a business with more than $3 trillion in annual revenue (https://www.statista.com/statistics/272710/top-10-oil-and-gas-companies-worldwide-based-on-revenue/) wouldn't challenge science they knew to be false, even though that theory is hurting their business currently, and will be more devastating over the next 10 years, you'd walk out of the movie because the plot was ridiculously implausible.

It's the same as if there was a false report stating that organic apples cause cancer, and rather than simply disproving the false report, all of the CEO's, of every apple business in the world, just said in unison "of course they cause cancer, but we clean them really well, and we are going to clean them even better in the future". Make sense? Of course not. There is zero difference between the two scenarios.

 

So curious what all the 'carbon isn't a problem' folk think of the EU applying a carbon tax to STEEL? 6% tariff being imposed on steel from China.

I begin to like EVs.

Mostly because mechanics of the new generation are pretty unskilled (in my country). And the less they can destroy, the easier to maintain a car. Real world example: not tighten, or over-tighten oil sump plug. Same for spark plugs, or - beware - air filter screws.

 

This is me. The newest cars are so ridiculously complex I'm kind of done with them. By coincidence, I dropped off my Macan for the 30k service the day after I helped my sister-in-law buy her Tesla Model Y at the dealer. I asked the Tesla salesperson what the long-term maintenance was for the Model Y, and his response was wiper blades and washer fluid (no brake replacement, because brakes are rarely used due to regenerative braking taking care of 95% of braking duties).

My 30k Macan service -- which only had 25k miles at the time, was supposed to be "oil change only" according to the books, but the dealer insisted the spark plugs need to be change at 30k (not really required until 40k) -- and the cost for just those two items was ridiculous. The rear brakes were worn at only 25k miles, apparently due to torque-vectoring (causing the rears to wear much faster than the fronts). The dealer brake quote was outrageous -- had it done for 1/5th (one-fifth) the cost at an independent. I have always used dealers for service on my DD's, at least while in warranty, and usually after, but now the cars are too complex and premium on dealer service is 3 or 4 times independent costs (instead the 30% premium dealer service used to be).

The complexity and service costs of new cars, are the biggest drivers for me to consider an EV for my next DD to replace the Macan. My sister-in-law absolutely loves her Model Y -- no maintenance, costs $14 in home-charging electricity to go 300 miles, no maintenance, and her favorite thing is never needing to go the gas station (has only had to visit a SuperCharger once in 2 years of ownership). She went from a long string of Mercedes to the Tesla and wouldn't go back to MB or anything ICE in a million years.

I personally can't stand the Tesla's golf cart dashboard, or the golf cart front bumper, or the single screen-based user interface, or the using phone as the key. If Tesla made a car I liked, it would absolutely be my next car. Most of the non-Tesla EV's aren't as mature technology-wise as Tesla, so I'm not sure what I'll do when I need to replace the Macan. One thing I will not do, for sure, is buy another new ICE Porsche. Love the Porsche cars, cannot stomach dealer-service or the ridiculous complexity (don't get me started on the water drains).

 

I totally can see this x6 years ago. EV or alternative is the way of the future. ICE is way too complex, too many moving parts, oils, hydraulic etc.
What is disadvantageous with EV here is the support infrastructure atm and the stink of saying they are greener but in reality not sure if it's true..
