I agree that it is clear from the photo at Watkins Glen that there were two hoses that ran through the trunk wall. Having established that the previous owner in the 80's added the catch can in the left side trunk

    I would propose 2 theories:

    1. The two holes in the trunk firewall were not originally used for the venting of the engine and transmission and that they were used for different hoses that were part of the return system or a venting for the fuel tank (venting unlikely because it would already have been well vented with the green hose). When the catch can was later added (and the fuel cell de-commissioned) these holes were re-purposed as a path for the hoses that went to the newly installed catch can.

    2. The two holes in the trunk firewall did indeed vent the engine and transmission but were somehow routed outside the body to dump any oil laden air to atmosphere. It would have been set very far back to avoid the possibility of venting oil on the tire. If that was the case then the two barbed ends on the fuel cell may have been blocked off supporting the theory that ATL used a generic adapter plate in that place rather than one that was specific to the fuel system design.

I also noticed the following hole in the trunk firewall (noted in the image below). Was this hole for the passage of the outlet of the fuel cell and is there a corresponding hole on the other side? this may give an idea as to how the fuel system was set up. I will also add that on the dash I noticed a big hole right where the radio would go. Is it possible this was the location of a switch to turn on the fuel pump that would move fuel from the cell to the side tanks? Again this would not need to cut up the original wiring harness and would have been easily fitted as totally stand alone.

yes, that hole was on the right side two... it`s for the fuel lines (outlet) from the trunck tank to the Bendix fuel pumps .... (that`s what I think)

the big hole in the radio hole cover was from a modern fire extinguisher system... hole is closed now with used mousehair...

propose one is possible.... but why two return lines next to each other........?!

Thank you for confirming the second hole for the fuel cell outlet. When plumbing the system I think it should all be done using rubber hose with clamps as it would have been correct to period. The AN lines with the coloured fittings are not correct and I imagine the inlet to the carburetor was modified well after Le Mans to receive the AN fitting it currently has. When you look at the rest of the fuel system it makes total sense that the entire system would have used hoses with clamps.

The hole on the radio makes perfect sense to be the fire bottle. Also it was a bit of a long shot to guess that to be the hole for a fuel pump switch because it was so large.

To answer the question of why two return lines is because I believe ATL used a generic part in this location where the additional ports could just be blocked off. I do not think the system was engineered to use the two return ports and I still have no evidence to why they would be necessary.

It is important to also consider what would have been done to handle fuel filtration. The system as it currently exists only really has the mesh in the fuel tanks and this is not enough for a carbureted engine. Of course a big fuel filter was added in the 80's but I would think that in period they just used the original FISPA glass bowl fuel filter. It is more than big enough for the task and quite a nice piece.

The real mystery is how the fuel got from the cell to the tanks? I maintain that a gravity feed to the side tanks is not likely. When both tanks were full the higher level of the trunk cell would have overflowed the side tanks. There must have been some way of transferring fuel once the side tanks were empty enough to not overflow from the fuel in the cell.

Here is my 1/24th scale model of the car based on the Fujimi kit. I also have the Top Marques 1/12th version, although I do not like the windshield on that model.

Matthias, is the motor to standard specs or is it uprated in any way? Would be interesting to know what the dyno output is.
