I bought a 1984 Mondial QV at auction a few days ago, which has been sat in a heated garage as part of a private collection for the past 8 or 9 years. The owner replaced the belts, tided it up and never used it.
I'm trailering it home this weekend before setting about looking at what rubber bits have gone bad, changing the fluids and giving it a good service, before starting it up.
Could anyone recommend a good service manual and a parts supplier in the UK? I'm very much a home mechanic and for the sake of a 'happy wife, happy life' am not wanting to spend a fortune (yet!)..
    Cheers,
    Paul

I have used Superformance and Eurospares in the UK, sometimes Maranello Classic Parts, and frankly they are all great. We are fortunate to have the range of specialist suppliers. Red Bay Spares in Europe is also excellent for used items.

The owners manual is actually a very good source of information, if yours doesn't come with that then get one for your model on line or off of ebay. The manual itself for the Mondial 8 is not like a Haynes manual, it is useful but presumes dealer level experience. Some videos on you tube by Heliodoctor are exceptionally helpful. Even if you don't do all your own work you will appreciate what the mechanics have to deal with.

There are many small and fussy things a home hobbiest can and should do to keep the Mondial in top shape. Especially for a car that has sat, taking apart eg the throttle pedal and cleaning and greasing the pivot bearings, and the throttle body fittings, cleaning and lubricating door hinges, trunk and door openers, snugging down various bolts and nuts, cleaning electrical connections, can all make the car feel much better. Enjoy the tinkering!

Thanks to you both for the advice. I'm looking forward to getting the car home and to start the process of getting it back on the road for the summer.

    So,

Having had the afternoon off work, I've trawled the forum, watched a few Youtube videos, and got my head around the owners and workshop manuals so I've got an idea where I'm going with this...

I'll order the engine service kit off Superperformance, (are there any discount codes knockng around?) along with the front suspension bushing kit (I know they are worn) auxiliary belts and a timing belt kit, but I cannot for the life of me find recommendations, or the latest specs for the fluids.
Brake fluid - is it just DOT 3?
    Gearbox oil
    Diff oil
    Coolant
    Engine oil
I don't need full racing spec stuff, just decent fluids that will prolong the life of the car.

    Any advice would be great.:(

My 1988 calls for DOT4, but it has the ABS brakes. The owners manual would specify the type, I expect it would be DOT4 for the QV as well. You can use DOT4 where DOT 3 is called for, but not the other way around, so you can't go wrong with the DOT4. ATE type 200 is what I use.

Gearbox oil. Redline MTL is the way to go. Some use Redline 75W90 NS for peace of mind as it conforms to the old factory spec, but fluid tech has moved on and MTL is fine. There are many threads on this on Fchat. I have used MTL for ages after experiemnting with other brands and grades, and find the shift quality is definitely best with this choice.

Coolant. The closest to a consensus I have ever found is to use G05 coolant chemistry, Zerex has it. The conventional "green" stuff was the factory fill in period. Readily available Prestone Universal would also likely be fine, it is pale yellow in colour. The colours are all over the place so green doesn't mean what is used to. Some use BMW or Mercedes coolants, which use a form of hybrid OAT chemistry. Seems to work out ok as well. Keep in mind these cars have brass radiators and the impeller on the original water pumps is brass, modern cars have no brass. So what is best for the moderns is not suited for the classics. Some think the modern hybrid OAT tech will eat away at the brass, and indeed affect the old rubber hoses and potentially head gaskets. The other consensus is that once you choose a chemistry then stick with it.

Engine oil - Any oil is fine. My owners manual calls for 10W40 semi synthetic. I have used full synthetic. Many use the now more readily available 0w40, albeit there is some claims that you increase oil leak potentials, others say not that just means some seals and gaskets needed renewing. Most Ferrari owners change the oil more frequently than is typical, making the actual oil choice even less important. Clean oil is the best oil.

Half the fun is tinkering on these cars. I wish you the very best, and once again, welcome - from one Paul to another.

    Cheers

Thanks for this - I'd gone forum blind!!!

it seems fluid choices are like politics, with everyone having their view on what is best. I'd looked at a dozen threads and got about 20 different suggestions..

Very true!!! I used to think they were all the same, until I saw some actual consumer tests, and there truly is a difference. Unfortunately I still don't know if that difference matters, so call me mud backwards.
