Baptism by fire as per Oliver in the morning talks. Good luck to him!
The Dakar Rally was moved out of Africa for other reasons than the ones you invoke. The organisers couldn't "sell" the rallye to the countries that hosted it: Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Senegal, etc ... So they moved the rallye to South America where Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and else welcomed it. Then, after a few years the costs went up, and these countries were asked to contribute more; they said no. The organisers looked for another venue, and Saudi Arabia took over, DAKAR tradename included. FYI: Some of the original team of the Dakar Rallye (including previous winners) kept faith in Africa, and decided to split with the Dakar organisation. They organise the less mediatised Africa Eco Race, held each year in the North West Africa, closer to the spirit of the original Dakar. Held in January, the Africa Eco Race usually starts from Monaco and finishes in Dakar.
Its a brand at this point so as to not cause confusion and spend on a new name etc they kept the old one. People still watch and follow so it was effective to do so. I dont blame them at all. Maybe the world 'new' should have been used lol. New Dakar.
How is that possible? Didn't he have the surgery a day ago? I had appendicitis and a surgery just before it burst and I was out flat for a couple of weeks. And I was even younger back then than Sainz.
I knew it !!! Apendicitis is a day surgery job these days. Modern surgery don't want you to spend time weakening in bed, or stopping your normal activities.
I loved the Dakar when it actually started in Paris. Ever since they moved it to South America, it was no longer the same thing and basically dead.
When I was young ( long time ago I know ) I was delighted with this race not only because of the competition but also because it was a chance to discover new countries and cultures, even partially. You are sadly right, everything now is reduced to « products « and « brands ». Jean Paul Olivier, a former famous broadcaster during the Tour de France ( cycling) was absolutely fantastic to share his geographical and historical knowledges with audiences every days all around the Country. Sorry I get emotional !
He does look stiff in his walk especially in the upper torso and when he turns he only turns with his head rather than his upper torso so he's definitely healing from the surgery.
At the beginning, the Dakar was an amateur rallye, launched by the late Thierry Sabine. Then it became a showcase for Citroen, Peugeot, and Mitsubishi but was still very convivial. Accepting the buggies was the thin wedge to introducing special Baja off-road vehicles with huge suspension travel; it changed completely the physionomy of the event. The Dakar changed orientation, became very professional, and increasingly attracted factory teams. Twice it changed location, and is now a major media event during the racing off-season. I still remember visiting the first "Paris-Dakar Rally" parc fermé at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris years ago, just before the start. How things have changed ...
Yes likewise please post any; last week the Cricfree suggestion worked perfectly here in France, I was amazed, it had been blocked in recent years.
So far I am happy with the $80 or so I've paid to F1TV for the season. No need for cable, not even electricity in d house. Just a cell phone as a minimum
it's fun watching RB self implode -- too bad Lil' Lewee is coming to whinge and diversify F, he would fit right in at RB. Can Newey leave this mess? That's the key ?
What going on with the pre race show on ESPN. Keeps locking up. Is it SKY or my local provider (comcast Jupiter FL)?
For those who want streaming, get the F1TV Pro subscription. It's like $90/year and has all sessions, the lower leagues, a bunch of pre and post shows, and historical race. https://f1tv.formula1.com/
I guess we'll see if Leclerc can at least keep Mercedes and Aston behind today, but one never knows when the recent Ferrari drama will strike.
