    LOL - Good observation.

It was repaired, and back in the air fairly quickly.

    I'm guessing:
    • 2 engine overhauls
    • 2 prop overhauls (6 new blades)
    • some chin sheetmetal
    • new o rings and locking pins for front strut.
    • removing brown stains from the seat cushions... :^)
A-26s are brick sh-t houses - Awesome planes! Roomier than the A-20 but that isn't saying much.

Watching the Kermit Weeks videos of the rebuild of his really gives you a sense of how tightly packed these planes were in military trim.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Pilots tended to be smaller back then. My father flew P-47Ds and he was only about 5'5". Had to eat bananas to get over the 120 lb minimum. I made it all the way up to 5'7" and no bananas needed, thankfully, especially since I was a WSO.

I think that it was 1943 when our football practice was interrupted by a buzz job of twin engine light bomber that was obviously something new and fast and LOUD. We didn't know what it was or who it was but it beat the place up for a few seconds. I found out later that it was my future brother-in -law and home town boy flying the first A-26. One of the awesomest airplanes of the war.

Bob- They were still using them in Viet-Nam with a hard nose full of guns.

i know, my brother-in-law flew them there as well as T-6 artillery spotters. He flew B-26's, B-25's, and A-26's. Liked the B-25 "just for easy flying"..

Bob- Dad had a lot of time in the B-25 post war. Back when pilots had to fly a certain number of hours per month to get flight pay, they had B-25s scattered all over the place just for that. At one point USAF was around 80% rated (pilot, nav, bombardier) overall. Now it is around 15%.

The airliner photo reminds me of the SR-71s at RAF Mildenhall. Aircraft was too long for the shelters/hangars, so the nose stuck out in the rain.
