Well, I'm a dummy. I have been using the ignition key to open the driver's door for 20 years, and wondering why it doesn't fit the passenger door. I probably only lock the doors once a year, so it's never been an issue, and it has worked all that time on the driver's door. Plus on the later 308's, there is a power lock on the passenger side door that's a slave to the drivers lock.

I'm reupholstering the door panels, and decided "while I'm in there" to resolve the issue with the passenger door lock.

It took a bit of time to figure out how to get it out and disassembled. I will post a separate thread of that topic, as I couldn't find anyone else who has disassembled the lock with pictures to DIY. Everyone says just take it to a locksmith. It's pretty easy to DIY, and there really aren't many locksmiths around who like these kind of projects.

Anyway, I get all 5 pins of the tumbler out, and the damned key still isn't fitting because the notches that drop into the left and right grooves that run the length of the key don't line up. Then, the "no, couldn't be" moment comes. I insert the key that I always thought was just for the rear louvers, and it's a perfect fit.

I guess the driver's side is just really worn out. I will rebuild that lock next week.

To add to this already incredible stupid adventure, 20yrs ago when I got the car, I machined a 2nd ignition key to use in the door, because the first one didn't fit well. I machined it on a mill from a piece of raw steel(left key in picture). Took several hours! Been using it for 20yrs, and posted here. No body mentioned my basic logic error!

I guess this is common to older Ferrari's. My 456 uses one key for everything. And so do all my other older cars.

A deep search here will come up with the Catalog Numbers of the Ilco blankls, fopr Ignition and yes the door locks.

There's also been recently a set of locks, NOS with keys, which almost makes it worthwhile in the time savngs alone.

I NEVER$ lock my car as smashing the window would be more $$$$ than anything they might steal inside!!

On my 83 308 the ignition key only fits the ignition. The smaller key fits the two doors and fuel filler louver.

In 27 yeas I have never locked my doors. In fact the passenger side door lock wasn't working when I bought it in 1997 and John Apen gave me a lock actuator when I picked the car up from him and I never put it in.

In fact I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread.

    +1

I've never locked or had the need to lock the doors on my 348 in the 19 years I have owned it.

I've left it out on the street overnight out the front of my place, in my driveway, up town during the when I am having lunch etc.

I don't worry about it because most are too scared to touch it or wouldn't even know how to open the door and they would not know how to steal it anyway.

Plus, there is nothing I leave in the car to steal either.

    Yep.

I don't want anyone to break a window only to find there is nothing in it to take. This actually worked once.

Same on my 89 328. Sometimes I lock the car; sometimes I don't.
The main reason I lock it is to ensure the locks/power locks continue to work! ;)

Very early one morning many years ago a couple of gentlemen decided they were entitled to what belonged to me and my next door neighbor. He had a second generation MR2 with T tops. They smashed in his window driver's side because the doors were locked. Nothing in there to steal so they came over to my place. My door on the 308 was left open (I'm actually surprised they figured out how to open it).

Had my door been locked, I can very safely assume they would have done to me what they did to my neighbor's car - only to find there was nothing it the car to take.

I haven't locked a car door in centuries and I never will. Ever.

I do the same thing with the 328, always did that with convertibles as nothing inside was as expensive and troublesome as a new roof.

It's funny that you guys don't lock your doors, because I don't either. I have owned a '99 Porsche Boxster for 10 years and have never had the key in the door. My 328 has never been locked either. Years ago, in the 70's, I owned a '78 Datsun 280Z that I kept locked all the time. One morning, I went out to the car to find the window smashed and the glove compartment opened with a crowbar. The car needed a new dash and a new complete window frame. I did not have anything of value in the car. In particular, any convertible I own, like my current 997 Porsche 911 will never get locked. I keep my 328 books, etc. in the house for good measure, as they are very hard to replace.
