the one everyone forgets about is the Carrera GT. Porsche had massive discounts on them towards the end of production. The problem is that every manufacturer not just Maserati is held to the Ferrari standard when Ferrari isn’t the standard it’s the exception. Everything else drops in value no matter who makes it.

  2. Not just the CGT.

The 7RS 4.0 was being discounted and sitting on dealer lots, rotting.

918 couldn't be moved until PAG invented the VIP program.

Heck, even nowadays, both the 296 and SF90 are dropping like flies in the winter on the resale market.

Porche is to me an anomaly. their 911 cars still fetch a premium ad they make 50k per year. Even the older liquid cooled ones seem to trade for close to new.
Porche seems to occupy that place rolex does in watches, its simply the badge of sucess.

Its also not hard to understand with the 911, they make a variant for every taste, the cars are well engineered and work, plus there is no shortage of support.

the 7rs was right around the recession and even then they were not sitting on lots rotting. 296 are nto sitting and still fetching a slight premium used.
SF90 is what happens when you push the logic of the customer being so dumb they'll buy anything, too far. SF90 is heavy and not good looking plus costa fortune plus.

Back to the 296, does anyone really want a hybrid in one of these cars, imp it would be way better without the electrics and weighting 3-400lbs less.

As is, 296 built out of metal and with batteries its still slightly lighter than the mnc20, so how did Maserati do it.
Ferrari as others have said is the anomaly, they have total brand cachet and cred, something modern Maserati does not.

IMo the biggest issue with the MC20 is its a mid engined Gt car. besides the c8 vette Im trying to think of a successful mid engine Gt car. Most Gt cars are front engine, thats the formula. Maybe the bora back in the day, but while stunning it wasn't really that successful.

Back to the porche formula, if you make one car, you need different versions. Three hard core Gt3 version to establish and maintain cred, and the Gt version for 90% of customer to welter Mitty about in Gt comfort. You can also see that at porche theyre going back to naturally aspirated flat 6 motors. If youre selling a fast flash car, it not only has to look the part, gotta sound it and impart those emotions.

There is a reason the last NSX didn't sell. Sounded like crap, looked like two front ends, was heavy

If youre selling sportscars its not just about objective numbers on a 2 lap magazine test, there are many objective factors, these are emotionally driven purchases.

the corvette e-rey is actually more drivable on roads than a z06, more responsive and just as fast acerating to highway speeds, but the punters want to z06 cause engine sound. And 99% of these z06 buyers show up at cars and coffe revving their motors, or blasting off in 1st gear, thats it, the entire sue cycle for most.

Lets put it this way, if the Mc20 with tis cf tub weighted 3-500lbs less and had a high revving na v8, then ferrari 296s would be having afar harder time selling, and porche would have some real competition with the high end 911s. Course theyd need consistently decent dealers who have the requisite mechanical experience too.

MC20 competes with the higher end vettes, 911s, and ferrars. It gets lost in the noise. Thats the same issue that befell mclkaren and a few other pretenders to the throne who didnt get it quite right. The Hurricane gets away with it because while deeply compromised it looks great, sounds great and lambo has cred which thye have kept all along from the miura contach days. In all fairness once Lambo ditched the awd and started to really develop the hurricane it became a really good car.

Ferrari can get away with a turbo hybrid 6 cause its ferrari, and in fairness they made it sound great and drive superlatively, so the downside isnt present.
Vette is hitting it out the park with the z06 cause the motor. Porche is migrating as fast as possible back to Na flat 6.

A faster accelerating tubo car means nothing in the electric era. If its ice powered its gotta have that Ice emotion, few turbos can pull that off..

    No pun intended.

Without knowing how hard it hit looks like it held up really well, and me cars are designed to split in two, just behind the bulkhead. its not the speed that gets ya its the stopping.

Heh, this is kind of a depressing thread. "lemon car" "depreciating fast" "hp numbers skewed" "not moving off dealer lots"

Aside from all that, is it even fun to drive??? It sure is purrrrdy

The reports are that yes it's wonderful to drive but it's not a 296 ...

    What you gonna do ...

It's getting Bora like reviews ... not wild and exciting enough I guess.

There ARE actual owners on here who love it ... keep searching.

    Some counterpoint

But Jay really, really loves the 296 as well.

The example he reviewed on his show was just ugly as F to me but it has more power and excitement.

I enjoyed my seat time in the car, more front end response than expected, shifts are fun - Italian, as the tach doesn't simply drop after pulling a paddle - and the turbo noises in cabin are really fun. Fastest thing, no. McLaren exists for that.

“Fastest thing” is actually Ferrari these days. Both the SF90 and 296 are faster than any car McLaren sells.

Maserati's biggest problem is inflating their prices to perceive an increase in value and product quality.
I'm sure the R&D on the MC20 was expensive but they are overpriced with a big depreciation hit, bottom line they drop like rocks.
Sticker $257k, selling for $200k and trade in at $165k, that's a real number from a someone at a dealer I know and even he said not to buy, umm yeah no.

Visited Maserati of Central Florida (Orlando) a couple weeks ago. Two Cielos depicted. I'm kinda liking this MC20 - but coupe, not Cielo.
I certainly agree with others - they drop in value horribly.

A sub 1K mile '22 white MC20 was wholesaled for $161K last week at Manheim PA. Car was brought there by an authorized dealership.

I happen to like the MC20 for both its performance and aesthetics...at $160K-$170K range, I'm very tempted. Is the current price level a telltale sign of the market or the brand? Will it bottom out around McLaren 570s?

Btw, is there any difference between '22 & '23 order than the driving mode switch?

  19. The brand, although the luxury / exotic car market is reverting to its normal depreciation curve (post-Covid).

I have a Maserati dealer close by to where I work, and it's actually next to a Hyundai dealer where I take my Tucson PHEV to be serviced. The Maserati dealership refuses to take any used MC20 in on trade. Just won't do it. Not "worth the floor space" as he so eloquently put it.

It doesn't mean other exotics won't depreciate, or continue to depreciate, but I feel like the MC20 is basically DOA at least in the U.S.

I have to wonder if it's going to get that low?? It would have to have some quirky maintenance extremely pricey thing, like the 458 gearbox issue, or MP4-12 water pump/oil pump weirdness, to take that level of hit IMO. The F1 tech-heavy Maserati fuel injection system is still a big unknown at the moment....seems to be very reliable so far though

I doubt it will hit McLaren or Aston Martin level of depreciation. McLaren is a glorified kit-car with Ferrari/Lambo style service cost that over complicate everything.

Maybe the Acura NSX is a good comparison? We thought it would continue falling off a cliff, but it eventually stabilized. A few years back I was hearing new ones going for $130k and today that's still about the low end of the used market.

All good points but, the modern maserati brand is a champion when it Comes to depreciation. True the Mc20 is a different machine to a Ghibli, but still that reputation rubs off.

Of the modern supercars or near supercars currently on sale mc20 was the the quickest to start going below msrp new, and certainly one of the very few that with low mileage is already a bargain compared to msrp. Could be that this is also loosing traction because like the 4c its an orphan car, a sportscar made by a company selling suvs and sedans, it does not have a predecessor nor will there likely be a follow-up car.

Still while I think buying a100k 10 yo mc12 sounds like financial suicide, have not heard anything bad about he masser yet, and while the engine is a question mark, its going into regular Maserati's too, so I assume its prob ok. We'll see in 2-3 years when these cars start to reach bottom and have been around for a while what reliability looks like.
