458 NVO board replacement; dealer alternative

If your NVO board, Ferrari part number 255426, needs to be replaced due to turn signals that won't work, or the flashing "Electrical System Failure-go to dealer" warning, this may save you a few dollars due to NOT having to go to a dealer to get the proxy file ($3k was the latest figure I got).

You can source the new NVO board from Aliexpress, put in this number for the Item Search, 1005004402633422. (credit to @24000rpm for finding this). It should come up with a price of $420.90. My total cost with shipping to the USA was $467, which is less than your preferred Ferrari parts vendors. You do need to tell the vendor that your car has LEDs. There is a message function after you place the order to communicate with them. They are fairly responsive.

The replacement procedure is relatively straight forward if you are slightly mechanically inclined. I have attached the two procedures below. The airbag removal and the steering wheel controls are from the workshop manual and the actual NVO board removal.

The LEDs work as before. One thing I did notice, and I'm not sure if it was this way before as my LEDs have been non-working for over 6 months now, is that under full throttle the 5th LED won't light up unless you're in manual mode and basically the engine is in the rev limiter. I'm not sure it was this way before. I'm going to message the vendor and ask them if they can alter the setting where the lights come on.

 

Airbag screws are T-30 torx security screws. That is not specified in the workshop manual. Total time to do the swap is 1-2 hours.

The vendor messaged me back and said that basically the fifth LED only comes on at where it comes on (basically in rev limiter, by my estimate at 9000-9250 rpm).

Well I have just completed my NVO PCB board replacement in the steering wheel as my turn signal actuators were not working and the start button was intermittent. Things were pretty straight forward following the two threads below and the relevant sections of the workshop manual.

The posted instructions, as well as the WSM are slightly unclear, but the air bag module basically came straight off, no prying necessary once the two rear side bolts (T30 security bit) were removed. Getting the T30 security bit onto the bolts is a blind aim, so just had to adjust the angle of the driver until I could feel the bit securely seated in the bolt head.
The airbag connectors have secondary locks on the top, a small flat-blade screwdriver gently pulled the tabs out and then the same flat-blade can be used to gently pry the connectors straight up and out of the airbag module.
Also it was unclear how to remove the buttons control module, but it turns out gently pushing the back side of it from the area behind the manettino and behind the start / suspension button area will coax the 3 rubber push plugs free from their receivers inside the wheel.

Further disassembly of the controls module was straightforward, just be gentle and patient with all the little harness connectors that go into the NVO board.
Perhaps the trickiest part of the whole job was when snapping the control module back into place on the steering wheel, ensuring all the wiring was routed properly so as not to interfere with getting the three rubber nubs back into their receptacles. I had interference behind the lower nub that took a second to get sorted.
You also have to pay attention to the wiring as you slide the airbag module back in place so that the airbag module metal legs/extensions with the threaded hole slide exactly into place. Basically just don't force anything, if it isn't going easy pull it out and adjust wiring as needed.
I followed the battery re-connect procedure, although I'll caution you need to read the whole WSM section on this as all the things you should do are not spelled out in chronological order or even on the same page.
Altogether the project was a success, taking approximately 90 minutes but could easily be done in less than an hour next time now that I have done it once.
My turn signal actuators are fully working again and thus far the start button has not had any intermittent issues like before, although it will take some more use of the car to confirm that the new NVO board fixed that issue also. Since the momentary switch is on the same board, I do suspect it is resolved.
In studying the original NVO PCB I cannot readily see where it has failed by any visual indicators, but glad this new part from aliexpress got it fixed and saved me $$ thousands!

 

Mine broke (turn signals stopped working) while at the dealer for the annual, so I never actually experienced it not working. But from the threads here I reminded them to make sure the steering LEDs worked after they repaired it. They confirmed they would. Got the car back and didn't think about it for a few weeks until I finally remembered to check and they were not working. They picked the car back up and I presume had to load the software or whatever and brought it back to me working. So it would seem to me like there is something they have to do in software to make the LEDs work. Do yours work after this self-repair?

 

Yes my LED steering wheel lights work. The seller pre-loaded the proxy file so that I didn’t have to go to the dealer. $480 was my total cost for this repair.

Thanks for this! Just found out the NVO is bad on my 458 and dealer wanted 2200+ to fix it. Ordered an aftermarket board from "MySupercarExpert" (same people that do the 458 carplay board, which i ordered at the same time. not linking as i'm not sure if that's allowed.). It was over $100 less than alibaba, no tax, and cheaper shipping too.

They also had the custom LEDs at one point but they aren't on the site currently. I texted them to ask, but if not, i'll order those and a new manettino sticker from MACarbon. Hopeful I can have a full wheel refresh in the next month.

 

More resources to rectify the nagging NVO board issues. Good to know. You will need a thin bladed device to push the tabs down/out of their slots of the LEDs. I used a tool that was in my iPhone toolbox. I could not find the tool on eBay or Amazon though.

 

on MACarbon the video shows using a metal tool he calls a "modified feeler gauge", but the pdf shows them using a trim removal tool like the below, is that what you're thinking of? That definitely seems like the toughest part, after my anxiety over removing the airbag but that should be fine with battery disconnected.

Those non-marking interior tools are way too thick. A feeler gauge on the thicker end would work perfect. To assist I'll post a picture later today or tomorrow of the OE LEDs showing where the tabs are to help guide everyone, with a tape measure for reference.

Thanks for this, let me be clearer, I bought a NVO board from a guy on ebay, brand new in box. Swapped it out and only the start button and windscreen wiper switched worked, so swapped the old one back as 'more things, worked on that one,
I'm trying to ask, is it plug and play, and should it have just worked, or does it need programming ?
My current NVO board is very strange, when I start the car, the electial fault warning pops up the RPM lights flash constantly,and the manettino dial doesn't work ( also on the screen it's just blue with no mode showing, HOWEVER if I wait somewhere between 5 and 15 minutes and I switch the windscreen on the thing completely corrects itself, however if I turn the windscreen wipers off before a minute or 3 thr RPM light flash once the electrical warning come on and it reverts back to previous state, I can then hit the wiper switch maybe a few times or I need to wait 30 ? Then switch them on again and all works perfect. If I then wait a few minutes with the wipers on, then switch them off all works perfect .... until I turn the engine off, then its hit and miss, with no rhyme or reason, sometimes they continue to work sometime I do the whole procedure again, doesn't make any difference if I swi h it off for a minute or and hour hits 50/ 50 hit and miss

Any help much appreciated

 

Have you replaced the battery lately? If more than 2-3 years old I would just start with that.

 

Thankyou for your reply, I suspected battery, and was going to replace it however when i was there they tested it, all the reading gave 100% good in all areas. .. all crank amps etc reading correct ?? Thoughts ?
Battery was already in the car when I bought it 3 months ago, always kept on a tender, it's an allstate battery, correct for the car.
I don't know the age of the battery.

 

Your NVO needs replaced. I had pretty much the same exact symptoms, and that ended up being the issue. If you're not handy, just take it to Ferrari and let them do it. It's not cheap, but you will enjoy your car so much more once it's fixed. It drove me absolutely nuts.

Hi thank you for the confirmation, I did swap it, new one didn't work, at all so my original question was ..is the NVO plug and play, or does it need programming in ?

 

I believe the only function that needs programmed is if you have shift lights. Otherwise should be plug and play. I have the lights on my wheel so I let the vendor know and they sent it pre-programmed.

 

I bought an original ferrari part so I have no idea if it needs programing, but nothing worked when we put the new one in

 

Valeo was the original manufacturer. Does yours have their name on it?
My alibaba replacement part did not but it works great.
