I think yes the tune is not a tune its a TCU delete and there are many complications with this and ediff issues which has been discussed at length in this and other forums I believe. Also the fluid that's supposed to be universal will not hold up over time. Throwout bearing seals will fail. I've researched this and will not get into where I get my information from. Plus say the second or third owner post conversion brings car for service will most likely not get the memo that you cannot use factory fluids for clutch system. @MichaelMatic I'm not bashing anyone, wasn't the intention, just stating some practices that are bad for the collectors in this arena. If cars fail in the future because of intentional negligence now, it isn't good for anyone. If I were just blanket bashing, I would have bashed others. Competition isn't a bad thing. @mwstewart FAI is probably a great install option. Have had many electronic components repaired through them that nobody else would touch. I've never had conversion experience with them but they are certainly more than capable. Plenty of great installer options across the network. We have worked with a bunch of great shops across North America, Europe and Asia.
^ I’m not going to make my job defending Dr. S, but I will say I disagree with a few of your statements.
Are the dr s and modena kits essentially the same from a hardware/design perspective? Ediff and ecu aside i mean.
There are subtle hardware differences, but not enough to say one is good and one is bad. They’re both good IMO. Now I’ll exit before someone starts shouting about hard lines vs flexible clutch lines/fluid differences (despite knowing Dr S also offers clutch out options for customers who prefer it). At least we can all agree that no matter which company you go with that deleting the E-diff is idiotic. Oh wait, never mind.
Thanks, are they both made in the usa? I want to do a compare and contrast and trying to figure out which kit to use.
Yep! That’s his name indeed. Do you know him? Very weird interaction. You know, in the BMW M online forums there’s a lot of threads on people trying to fit an ‘oem-style-like’ radio with Carplay, Android Auto, DAB etc. bringing their M3 or M5 to the modern era. Some few hundred pages of reviews about sellers, manufacturers, pros, cons, looks, prices. Some praising the Chinese radio makers, some cursing them for messing up electronics and audio. Some wish they never cut up the dashboard for it, some can’t live without now. Somehow this thread totally reminds me of that haha
I do not know the answer to that. George (Cambio Manuale/Dr S) and Todd (Modena Lucerna) would certainly be able to though if you send them a message. They’re both very responsive, and seem like good people. Not to stir the pot, but why not go with EAG again? It seems like you have a good relationship with them.
What this thread convinces me of is to never change my F1 to a manual - sheesh! What a sheeeyat throwing contest! Kevin
I would like to chime in and say how I was initially impressed with what EAG and Dr. S successfully attempted to do, and achieved to a certain extent. That is, by engineering a manual shift conversion for those whom previously had paddle shifters, obviously. I take my hat off to their opening ones eyes to the possibilities! But the more informed I became, as much as I would want to do this similar conversion myself, particularly using the Billet Parts, I have become somewhat disenchanted because each, no matter which way you slice it, don’t actually change the mechanics (ie-utilizing the shift rods) to change the gears but utilize the same high pressured oil to do so, but rather than it occurring electronically by way of the paddles, its done in a rather ingenious manual fashion, I must admit, by relocating such function to a beautiful Shift Gate with cables somehow replicating the action of the paddles. I can certainly agree how this would be enormously beneficial in terms of general function being able to maintain a gear “Manually” and so forth, but I am perhaps a lone hold out for wanting the “feel” of those Rods, no matter how much they may shake in the gate. As to the Argument that doing such a “Conversion” is tantamount to “Transgendering” an Auto, I would argue in the alternative. If the F1 Transmission is made of internals which contain Shift Forks, Conical Gears and a Spring Loaded Clutch Plate engaged by a Throwout Bearing, it’s like taking a Valiant Prancing Thoroughbred Stallion and throwing panties and Lipstick on it, taping up the poor studs privates (Gear Shift) to hide them and pasting on B_ _ bs ( Paddle Shifters) and calling it a Filly! I say corrective surgery is in order to let the Stallion Prance in all his glory!
Let me reread this Friday night when I'm halfway through a bottle of Jack and then it may make sense enough to formulate a reply.
On the positive note, the reason is that because this is a hobby we love so much and because it's a relatively expensive one in both time & $$, people tend to put their beliefs in this area on an almost religious pedestal (literally in that they have blind faith in their viewpoint whatever it might be).... you see this type of behavior in the "elite" levels of any hobby. Cyclists that have bikes that cost more than my BMW will swear by their 500 dollar oversized pulley wheel made of plastic and how it helps them save 2 grams on their bike and 5 watts in the drivetrain. Hi-fi nerds will claim this cable made of unobtainium wrapped gold nanotubes sounds better than this other one made of copper. etc. etc. .... it is the adult version of the kindegarten argument of "my dad is better than your dad". On the negative note, because this hobby is so beloved and a relatively expensive one AND most people (especially those with money to splash at high-end italian exotics) have the engineering knowledge comprable to a potato .... there's lots and lots of money to be made by snake oil salesman and when there's rival snake oil salesman vying for the same niche, the mud slinging starts. You have will always have the shills in these hobbies ....it's basically the only way scammers can convince someone who's of otherwise sound mind/health to drop 500usd on 2 dollar plastic parts for their bike, or pay 1000USD for special HDMI cables (even though they're literally a digital signal and it either works or doesnt).... you need people "within" the hobby to vouch for it .... inside forums like this ....or those with youtube channels or whatever. It sucks ... but it always has been this way, and it always will be this way
I'm sure the audio dudes say the same about people paying $20k to make their car slower. Sent from my toilet using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Very well put. With many of the products and services that are offered or discussed in this forum it's somewhat dubious if their performance is even remotely close to what is being advertised. I agree that the folks with mechanical or even automotive engineering backgrounds are a tiny minority here, but I would expect that there might be a fair amount of entrepeneurs, managers, people with business degrees etc. - i.e. people who should be used to ask for quantitative proof before ordering a product/service. So it's quite astonishing to me that so many extraordinary claims seem to be accepted without any meaningful scrutiny.
Business degrees? I can't think of anything more useless. You strike me as very young and thus naive. Never assume someone that owns a Ferrari or another exotic as someone with knowledge beyond their own area of expertise. Everyone is susceptible to being a victim or scammed if it's outside their narrow range of experience. College degrees, career positions etc only give you the knowledge to ask questions, but scammers are usually artists at their craft too.
You would think, but haven't you noticed the people with that sort of background in these threads give objective reasoning which is completely ignored by the people giving emotional reasoning? Sent from my toilet using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Yea, perfect example is my thread on the ediff delete and how that procedure effectively neuters the unit into an open diff. Dan from NGS was adamantly claiming that it would somehow revert into an LSD (despite the component having none of the necessary components necessary to actuate the clutch pack once hydraulics is gone) and went so far as to delete YouTube comments on his videos and just spouting blatant lies here (before his account got banned). He even posted a stupid "burnout video" to 'prove' the lsd functionality is kept (being able to do a burnout on a loose surface in a straight line in no way represents lsd functionality) He was trying to protect his business of performing conversions as a service. I imagine most users would think twice to preform a conversion of they'll lose their LSD functionality and at the time, it was easier to do an ediff delete than to sort out how to keep it. It is dirty and dishonest but stuff like this isn't something that really gets addressed in the "proper channels" (it's not like he was SBF misappropriating client funds). Was he being deliberately misleading because he knew better and lied? Or was he just an idiot? Who knows. But selling high margin accessories within the high end retail space typically is characterised by agents not knowing wtf they're talking about. This type of stuff would never fly on b2b where the product/service is evaluated from a much more fundamental basis whereas retail is more like oo this is shiny this makes me feel so fluffy and gooey inside.
