Shanghai works to remove bumps ahead of F1 return The Shanghai Formula 1 circuit has completed work to grind down some surface bumps ahead of the return of the Chinese Grand Prix next week. F1 will be racing in Shanghai for the first time since 2019, and its addition to the calendar this year is especially interesting as it is the first time that the ground effect cars introduced from 2022 will have driven there. The current generation of F1 machinery is more sensitive to bumps, a common feature at the Shanghai venue because the track is built on swampland where ground movement is common. Mindful about the need for an increased focus on bumps, repairs have been completed at various parts of the circuit to remove any bumps that could cause problems. Following an FIA track inspection that took place at the end of last year, Shanghai worked with Herman Tilke's engineering and architect company to grid down and reseal areas of the track that were of concern. Despite work to address the bumps, F1 teams are still facing a great deal of uncertainty heading into the event because little data exists about the characteristics of the track surface. https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/shanghai-works-to-remove-bumps-ahead-of-f1-return/10597829/

I sense total disaster. Friday...A race schedule that gives all 20 cars and drivers just one hour of practice on what will be a new track for both the cars and the drivers. Followed by Sprint qualifing...this only proves that the Sprint race is a sham. Considering the conditions...including the weather...pushing the cars at this point is destruction derby time. Saturday...the Sprint race followed by main race qualifying. Who in their right mind will push in the Sprint race and risk their car for qualifying in the big race. Sunday... will any of the cars be left to run...or be able to run in top form? I see ten cars limping to make the race distance.
Obviously, money. It isn't being "allowed" to run, it is forced to run by Liberty and under a horrible format and dangerous conditions considering the track and the lack of practice.
With all the money reportedly spend to grind down the notorious bumps in the track, if it doesn't prove to be enough, a lot of cars to have their bottoms severly damaged. It could be like the tire-year at Indy when barely a third of the field raced.
Well we can hope the FIA inspection will yield effective corrective action. The sprint is absurd for this weekend. They need to get Austin fixed as well. Its a touch bumpy.

They're adding some. Teams will be informed that only 2 of 14 are loose, but not which ones. It adds to the drama. If it doesn't rain, they'll break a dam and flood the track. sjd
No i wasn't talking about safety aspect. After the gifted Covid to the world, they should be allowed to stage any world class stuff.
Guess Lando wont be winning his first here either lol - McLaren F1 team bracing for "damage limitation" in Chinese GP McLaren team boss Andrea Stella says he is expecting Formula 1's return to China to be an exercise in "damage limitation" for his squad given its large number of low-speed corners.
I'm growing a little tired of this sort of pre-race commentary from the teams. So you're throwing in the towel before you even arrive? Instead of crafting drafts of excuse statements... how bout you "fix your f-ing car."
They cant - Thanks budget joke limit! Baked in issues are not going to be solved when you show up at testing .4 or .5 down now. Its over after just a few races.
