    Hello All!

I recently acquired a 2013 California and had a weird mechanical issue today. The previous owner just did a full gearbox replacement so I didn't expect to have issues related to it anytime soon. I've noticed a few concerning things in the last month but none were really large enough to warrant a service visit (just an occasional rough idle on cold start which goes away after the car is warm).

Decided to drive the car to my office today, everything was normal until I downshifted into first gear. I stopped and a violent shaking / rattle started to come from the front passenger side of the car. I limped it into a parking spot and left it there for 20 mins. Upon starting the car, 1st gear is a little rough but did a light acceleration for ~100 feet and the car shifted to 2nd and Neutral without issue or hesitation. Nothing feels off until I'm in 1st gear stopped with my foot on the brake, then the violent rattle starts again. I did recently lower the vehicle on aftermarket wheels that are significantly bigger than factory specs. I'm guessing its a motor / transmission mount of some kind as no lights are present on the dash but I also know transmission issues are prevalent on this generation.

Curious if anyone has experienced anything similar before, TIA for thoughts and opinions. PFA.

Larger / Aftermarket wheels are the #1 source of DCT malfunctions in my experience.

The gearbox cannot distinguish malfunctioning speed sensors from incorrect wheel, rotational speed due to the aftermarket wheels.

I’ve experienced all sorts of strange symptoms, that once Siri The stored faults, incorrect wheels put back on the car, Everything goes back to normal.

I’m not saying this is correct for situation but from what you outlined above, this would be where I would start

Wouldn't a speed sensor issue or DCT issue spark a gearbox malfunction light? I'm thinking since I don't have any lights on the dash and shifting is fine (no slipping / missing / skipping gears) it may be just engine mounts, the vibration is only present while braking / stopped in 1st gear. We'll see when she goes into service on Monday

Aftermarket wheels/tires: The critical numbers are the front and rear tire revolutions-per-mile and their ratio. Stock numbers are 778 front and 746 rear for a ratio of 1.043 (exact #s vary slightly depending on tire brand). I went two inches wider front and rear with no issues because I kept the ratio the same and the car's electronics can't tell that anything has changed. Look up the #s for your tires on the manufacturer's website and calculate the ratio.

I calculated 1.058 ratio on my tire dims (746.3 front 705.3 rear). We'll see if that is a large enough variance to cause major issues, may end up selling the car and upgrading to a Cali T since I can fit the wheels and the transmission has a higher tolerance for abuse. Sending it to Mark Douglas Motorworks in Orange County this week. They're fantastic and have fixed numerous little demons in my past F-Cars. Time will tell, thanks to all for the input so far! Appreciate the knowledge and helpfulness of the F-Car owner community :D

If you have the stock wheels/tires,install them and see if that is the problem. And the T not only has much more power stock,it has a lot more than can be uncorked (look up the thread "California T and Portofino: ECU Tunes?").
