Ranger royalties were 2.5% paid to Yolgnu; Rio Tinto payments were about $5m per annum for the operational life - the $700m being bandied about is the claim made in the court case that is currently being disputed by the government.

Has nothing on the queen of the sky…the 747.
A380 looks like a flying block of flats, nothing majestic about it.

Not only is the 747 is majestic to look at in the air, but the cockpit of the 747 100-300 series is awesome with old school analogue instruments. The pilots and flight engineer really had their work cut out having to balance fuel, set cabin pressure and enter waypoints to navigate.

That's just beautiful. Thank you for posting. The demise of the flight engineer spelled the end of dignified air travel. How I long for the day we return to airfares being 3 months wages, there was a dress code and the trolley dolly wore a little white hat and heels as she passed you a martini before take off.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to get the jump seat in a number of take offs and landings in a 747 in my years at Qantas in the “good old days”before 911. The only one I never got was into Kai Tak Hong Kong.

They are special and so memorable, watching them fly over full of cargo and "chucking " them into position for the final approach to "Tulla" I get a buzz every time, even my old dog knows the sound of the engines and alerts me!

I remember coming back from L.A one-year full QANTAS 747 -she took for ever to climb such an experience,we were spoilt by those planes and the 707s

Let's not forget the polished fuselage, smoking on the flight, and that spiral staircase:

Oh, and when Boeing actually made a quality product!

The early 747-100/200 had Pratt and Witney JT9D engines with water injection. At airports such as Singapore, if it was too hot they had to wait for the temperature to drop so that they can get enough thrust to take off with the water injection into the engine. The crew were really working to get the big bird up.

They had a major issue with the engines early on -called in the head of Ansett engineering and "Alan P" solved the issue .

Haven’t been to Longreach, but very familiar with the aircraft and knew some of the Connie pilots that flew her after she was restored…….The golden era of aviation.

Hah, the F-111C simulator only had one destination, San Francisco

My mate was the flight-sargent in charge and we often jumped in when it was free (rarely) and bombed SF :p

No actual flying involved. The pilot punches in the destination, taxies to the runway, and hits "Start". The rest of the time is spent chatting up the hosties.

I worked in the QF simulator department (engineering) and have done thousands of hours on the sims. I’ve done everything imaginable in the sims such as flying the 747 and 767 under the harbour bridge, barrel rolls, loops etc. All the stuff that they aren’t designed to do :):):);)

    I was
I was awoken this morning around 5.00am by the sound of an Atlas Airline 747 thundering in, for some reason their 747s have a far deeper sound than the CP/Singa 747s ?
