Good morning everyone, had some questions regarding 275 exhaust systems and was hoping everyone could weigh in. David Carte (who will be greatly missed by us all after his unfortunate passing) put together a great document on iacpfa’s website but I still had some lingering questions.

    https://iacpfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/cavallino_exhaust_2018_gph_1.pdf

All of the 275 Abarth systems I have seen have been finished in wrinkle black, but in the document SA #03747 is shown with an Abarth system in silver and then many of the Spacem systems are finished in silver? I have several original Ceretto systems and they are all satin black, but there seem to be quite a few examples in silver also. Do we have any theories on why these systems are silver versus the usual black? Were they salon or show cars? Some other reason?

I was also wondering if anyone knew when ANSA started making aftermarket/replacement systems for the three different types of 275’s? Although none of them that I’m familiar with are properly fitting systems, just a “better than nothing” option.

Also finalizing our fixtures and patterns on the production of duplicate exhaust for the 4 cams

That last, 3rd photo I posted is likely a 4-cam and may have Ceretto system, but just guessing.

Just to confuse things, I think "Lancia" has it backwards. Abarth= black. Spacem=silver.

Thanks Dyke, I stand confused! I went by discussion with David Carte, and his shop, and the period photos I posted of silver systems that appear to show the square profile resonator ends (at the pipe union) which I believe is the Abarth detail. Perhaps someone has other photos?

In Davids guide most of the systems I see identified as Cerreto are black. There is a 330 GTS with a silver Cerreto from a period Road & Track.

Let's see the judges deal with the "white" painted systems on a 4 Cam on the factory assembly line. I have the photos.

Was that car and its original owner a story in Prancing Horse?

That becomes the owners problem. It is expected any unusual feature to be documented and shown the judges.

They are not cookie cutter cars and we all know it. When you have a non standard feature, no problem just show documentation.

Its not unlike a 275 GTS with factory fog lights. Not a standard feature but we know there is at least one. Factory has documentation of the order and subsequent build. There are countless cases of this kind of thing. All you need is documentation.

Wayne Obry and David Carte were great about that. They provided their clients with a book documenting the entire car and every/any unusual feature. Many other restorers have since followed suit. Some still do not.

Jeff: I have no idea if a Prancing Horse article was ever written about the car, I have not been a member of the FCA for over 30 years. See my previous comments regarding concours judging.

Brian: I understand your response regarding it being the owners responsibility to "prove" the car to the judges. However, that only works if the judges are willing to ask questions and listen to answers.

2nd thing they do. Ask owner if there are any special items or features.
Its a collaboration, not an altercation.
They are not Famous Amos Cookies made 10,000 times all exactly the same and everyone knows that.

It may not have been Prancing Horse, I don't remember where I saw it but was a published story years back. What I do remember is that it was told by a pilot who had finished flying in the Middle East and on his way back to the US. He had ordered a new 275 and went to the factory to see/get his car that was being finished. I want to say it was Manicardi that was ushering him around the factory. The buyer said how he sure would like his exhaust to be white like on the P cars. The initial request was a "no" but when he picked up the car Manicardi pointed out how this had been done.

    Mr. Ridgely,

Would you by chance be referring to chassis 10525? The four cam originally delivered to Mr. Dick Irish?

The photos you mention provide an excellent reference for how the down pipes transition from a natural steel to the silver finish. We work that specific detail into any system we refinish.

To echo Brian's response; Any judging team would do just fine with this variant provided the entrant supplies evidence.

Dustin: Yes, 10525, but there are probably others also.

10525 had a number of special features, I wonder if the exhaust is noted in the "List"?

375: The Alestimenti for 10525 only mentions "see list of special features". It does not specify each item on the "list". I have never seen one of the actual "lists". In this case, we have actual photos to document the exhaust system.

clearly that the main problem with these events like the national and Cavallino, etc. the judges are too pompous in some cases afraid they might learn something so they don’t ask any questions or look at your presentation like the whole briefcase of manuals photos three ring binder of most common errors in judging no feedback and no 15 minutes that way they avoid all issues and walk away this is now three years in a row three different cars

Brian: Sorry, I know you and your better half are working to address judging failures, but Greg is correct on this issue. It was that way 30 years ago and appears to have not changed much in the ensuing time. By the way, Greg is not the only individual in the recent past to have experienced this problem.

Once again we brought it to Chris' attention after three events in a row. Chris is now realizing some of the problems and did a minimal correction putting the car back in platinum and said he's working on getting the trophy, but the damage is already done. I don't know what Brian's issues are.
