An understated comment. Taking over the lead role of one of the all time greats after such a tragedy is no small feat. Big respect deserved.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/fernando-alonso-is-driving-alongside-the-worst-driver-in-the-field-f1-pundit-calls-for-aston-martin-to-sack-lance-stroll/ar-AA1nwiTl
"Fernando Alonso is driving alongside the worst driver in the field" - F1 pundit calls for Aston Martin to sack Lance Stroll

Danish F1 pundit Jason Watt feels Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin teammate, Lance Stroll, needs to be sacked. The Canadian has not had a good time as a teammate of the Spaniard in the last couple of years. The driver has outperformed, but even when that was expected, the level of gulf between the two drivers has been astounding.

In the most recent race in China, the gulf of performance between the two drivers was more than obvious, and it showed as well in the results. In the sprint shootout on Friday, Alonso was one of the top 3 qualifiers, while Stroll could not even make it to the top 10.

To make matters worse, the Sprint race saw Lance Stroll lose out to the Alpine of Esteban Ocon, who overtook him on the last lap of the race. The subsequent qualifying for the main race on Sunday was not much different for Stroll, as he was once again knocked out in Q2, while Fernando Alonso qualified in the top 3.
Looking at the points standings as well, one thing is quite clear Aston Martin is a team running with one good driver and that cannot be a recipe for success for anybody.

In a column for Ekstra Bladet, Jason Watt was quite harsh on the Canadian and wrote that Lance Stroll should be sacked immediately. He wrote:

"Give him the sack immediately. [Alonso] is driving alongside the worst driver in the field, in my eyes."
Aston Martin back Lance Stroll as Fernando Alonso's future is secured
Amidst rumors of a lack of clarity when it comes to the Canadian's future, Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack was questioned about Stroll and his place in the team. Krack had his hand around Lance's shoulder as he said that the team was with the driver and the project was built around him.

    Talking to Motorsport.com, Krack said:

"Last week, it was mainly about Fernando. But we also know that Aston Martin is Lance's home. We know that and the whole project has always been around him. So we look for continuity. I've always said that that is very important. So we will see in the next weeks."
After just five races into the season, Lance Stroll finds himself with less than one-third of the points that Fernando Alonso has accrued this season. It's going to be very hard for Aston Martin if this is the level of performance the Canadian persists with for the rest of the season.

FA had a full taste of Lance and his idiocy in Austin the season before FA joined Aston. Again with weaker cars, Lance would have injured other drivers. He is beyond moronic in skill at this time. Along with his pathetic entitled ego. A toxic combination that F1 needs to be rid of. Aston and Lance de-value F1 currently.

And: Lance has scored the most WDC points of all Canadian F1 drivers. :p Yeah, yeah, I know, different points systems etc

And: He is just one pole position away from equalling Gilles' record

Ah, here we go again, the myth about Enzo's little Prince of Destruction.

Reality check in aisle 5: All romanticizing aside Jacques was a LOT more successful in F1 than his much beloved father. The stats are not looking good for Gilles, no matter how much the fans adore(d) him.

With all due respect, bullsh*t. Gilles was a self-made diehard racer who lived in a house trailer. Lance is a billionaire's wanker son failing to live up to his father's delusional expectations.

I kind of agree with you. However, even though JV was most successful, I certainly wouldn't rank him above Gilles. Nevertheless, I do think Gilles is overrated. He was a very popular driver who drove for the most popular team and he gained his "legendary" status because he died on track. Some people like to put him in their top 5 all time greatest list which to me is insanity.

I watched Gilles on TV and loved him. I've been to his home town in Canada and read a lot about him. And I was devastated when he was killed, saw the footage on TV.

So I have a bit of an idea when talking about him. The stats on his record are not telling the full story because his life was cut short. He could have easily won the title that Jody got.

But: first you need to finish before you finish first

He never understood that and ultimately it was a contributing factor to his death. His son was a more rounded/matured driver and snatched the title. If you look at Jacques accolades, he is one of the most accomplished drivers winning F1 and Indy and then some. People don't give him enough credit but to me he is another Andretti or Mansell.

Gilles likely had the talent to belong to the top five but he lacked in other areas to actually become a top 5 driver.

Something others forget and no Lance' record is anything but accomplishment. Any podium was only gained at the loss of those ahead of him due to attrition. Lance has accomplished nothing of note other than being in the series for much too long. He drives in circles and has minimal positive impact but measurable negative affects. Lance is the joke of the paddock and the grid all to the entertainment and dreams of less than honorable sweat shop clothing salesman.

I remember being in England back in 2000 and working together with Justin Wilson to craft a letter to Minardi :) The day he signed his F1 contract I called him and we spoke for a while on day when the whole world wanted a piece of him. He thanked me for everything even though I barely did a thing. A real gentleman.

Great memories and Justin was such a lovely guy. I miss him terribly.

Gilles could take a car that didn't deserve points and win in it. He could push the car harder than anyone, and that's why Ferrari (and so many Tifosi) loved him. It's also why he destroyed cars and eventually himself. His peers were often in awe of his skill, particularly in the rain.

Lance can barely get a podium capable car into the points. And he crashes nearly as often. His peers are in awe of his lack of skill more than anything....

Gilles reminds me of Colin McRae. Flat out all the time. He had his moments of brilliance but often went past the limits. To win championships you have to win races, and to win races you have to finish the races. So IMO he can never be in the top of the all time rankings along with Schumacher, Senna, Prost, etc. Just as McRae is nowhere near as good as Leob or Ogier. But there were times when they were pretty jaw dropping.

Gilles is surely one of the greats even if his results do not reflect it. It was an all encompassing package that included a rags to riches story with Ferrari that has only gotten more romantic with time. Comparing him to Stroll is a total waste for countless reasons and it was just such a different time too. Gilles used to live on Coke, Sugar Pie, Steak and potatoes. Again super nostalgic now but impossible in modern F1.
