Torque was 100 times better than Top gear but then it was a motoring show and Clarkson , the hippy and the gnome are 'just' entertainers, PW was a straight shooter , loved that show and thanks Mark for reviving OLD memories

 

That's the book I referred to in my previous post. IIRC the cover photo was of Peter sitting on the bonnet of a red '77 XJS (I think it was the Jag press car). He looked very '70s indeed!

The old Torque series was always something I looked forward to on TV, even though I can't actually remember too much of the content now. Also his Marque series was good viewing too, he showed a genuine passion for cars and motoring. Hopefully the ABC can see their way to releasing both series on DVD, or show them on ABC2.

Scary stuff. I've still got those segments on VHS, from the days when I used to try and record anything on cars that was on TV.

 

OMG.... Me too! I use to tape *anything* on TV that was car related! I taped quite a few of Peter Wherret's HWW segments, plus news stories on various motor shows, etc. As a kid, i used to be obsessed with trying to record onto VHS tape anything remotely interesting about cars that was on TV!

 

To think many years latter ,I would own that same Corniche .

I met him a couple of times in the early 80's and found him very unpleasant , but then, either of us may have been having a bad day..

 

Modeler was one of the regular posters I miss. It's hard to fathom he died about 12 years back. I recall a really nice dinner we had when came to Melbourne. Always cheery despite his health challenges at the time.

Been trying to find the footage of him "Thrashing " the Corniche around Calder, but no luck.

I know it is my old Corniche, as it was the only one sold new here in that colour Combo.

 

But not the worst tv type, I knew Penny Cook and her husband, Clive Robertson, was a genuinely, genuinely unpleasant person, embarrassed her greatly on many occasions.

 

Never liked him on the late news , smart arse

 

Modeler had a ride in the 355CH when Peter owned it and then came to my place for dinner and I took him for a drive in the QV ...... I found him a lovely man

Poor Peter, a proto-greenie with all his concern about wasting resources.

Today we have 500hp SUV's doing the school run, not to mention rare-resource-intensive coal powered EV's.

 

The only positive comments I can make regarding PW are ..

He raced and rallied Alfa -Romeos

And that wonderful Bolwell charging through the tunnel........Looking for Ian!

IIRC didn't Wherrett get sacked from Torque after he got done for drink driving and fought the coppers all the way to the car??

 

Was Mel Gibson wasn't it ?

 

Pretty sure Wherrett had a shocker too and that was it for Torque. I recall he defended the charges but I have no idea of the outcome.
