Hello all, I recently picked up a 430 Spider and it's been great. However, a few days ago, I hopped into the car in the garage (the top is/was down), and started it up. It beeped a bunch, and showed the "top going up" symbol on the dash. The top is fully down/closed. I pushed the top close button, nothing happened. I turned it off, back on, same issue. I tried to close the top, nothing. The "top error" goes way after 3-5 seconds, and nothing else is presented when I push the button. Also, there are no noises, no pump sounds, no motor sounds, no movement, nothing. It's almost as though the button isnt being pushed at all. Fuses good. Pump fluid is full, not burnt up. Switch was replaced, tested, no change. Battery was reset. Any thoughts?
You'll likely need to get a code reader and see what's happening with the top system. Could be a micro switch failed. Have you tried the top open side of the button? I know it seems silly, but maybe the close cycle didn't complete? Is your trunk open or popped?
Code reader was unable to communicate with the PC at the shop I went to. I tried both sides of the button, and a new button. Trunk and bonnet both closed fully.
I'd buy your own reader that people here are using. You need to be able to see what's going on live. Not sure what code reader the shop had, but a simple reader that just spits out codes won't cut it.
Apologies, it's actually a concern itself - it's a Ferrari shop with the proper computer. Wasn't able to communicate with ECM, however his diagnosis wasn't necessarily a bad ECM. He's swamped at the momnent, so car is home and I'm hoping I can figure it out
I was just about to ask you that If you don't have access to a suitable scanner (or the Roof ECU is faulty and not allowing communication), all I can suggest is checking fuses and the microswitch table below: See page 4 and onwards. "Close 3": If you put the windows all the way up, do they go down when you push the roof switch?
If A) Using the roof switch only: I suspect the Roof ECU has failed and can't talk to the Window ECU on the databus... or Window ECU has partially failed (or one of the window position sensing microswitches has failed). Do the windows drop when you open the doors? If B) Roof switch and Window Switches: I suspect the Window ECU has failed. The Window switch is not talking to the windows or the Roof ECU. Without a valid signal from the Window ECU, the Roof ECU will not raise or lower the roof.
There are a lot of things that could be going on here. I would start with the basic stuff like: -make sure the switch for the top is fully plugged in (switches can side or wires could have popped off) -rear deck lid fully closed. Open it and close it. Make sure the car sees that it’s shut. Mine sometimes wouldn’t see that it’s closed bc that panel had been mis aligned ever so slightly by previous work. -hook the car up to the battery tender and run the top with the motor off. You can’t really hear the sounds with the motor running. Note what is going on specifically Lastly you could take the capote cover off physically and fold out the roof. That will physically reset the micro switches. If it doesn’t reset then I would reset the battery to clear everything and see what happens. You can run it with the capote off and see how the cycle goes. Take my advice with a grain of salt though. I fixed my roof which had wholly failed but I think some of my methods are not 100% per the wsm. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
i.e. just look at the warning lights on your dash. @Rickdeaconx The diagnostic chart shows that the windows are one of the first things to be checked in the raising sequence (apart from obscure things like vehicle speed and pump temperature). Let’s first determine if your windows work at all. Does lowering the windows manually allow rooftop operation? Did you check the fuses with a multimeter or only visually?
Thanks for the replies! For those keeping track - the shop did a hard reset on the battery and it works great. Completely unrelated, as I drove away, a fuel pump died. My friend said "welcome to Ferrari"
