Great insightful post by Emile Bouret on instagram. Image Unavailable, Please Login "(Design) Fix Friday — Having seen the Ferrari 12Cilindri for the first time last night, I’d written I had only one criticism; that it is perhaps too subdued for a V12 flagship. I’ll wait to make that determination once I see it in person, as I suspect I’ll change my mind then. ____________________________________________________ Into the night, however, as I took a more in-depth look at the photographs & videos that followed the press shots, I realized there was an actual design element that was bothering me; the delta wing rear graphic. And so, if I could make a change to the outstanding work of @flaviomanzoni & his talented team at Ferrari Design, it would be in this area, as illustrated above. ____________________________________________________ The main issue for me is that it truncates the car’s profile, not a typical aim of designers, as the design adage goes, “Make it longer, lower & wider.” The shape of the graphic also seems too disruptive to my eye, & non-automotive. I get that they wanted to balance the front graphic (the 365 GTB/4 Daytona “mask”), but that is already accomplished by the horizontal taillights. To me, there’s an element of “try-hard” — an effort to make the car less traditional & more modern looking — that is just not necessary. ____________________________________________________ Anyway, it’s just one guy’s opinion, & there isn’t a right answer, as everyone is entitled to their own tastes & opinions. Overall, I think the design is successful. What do you make of it? Excellent commentary from those of you who chimed in, btw!"
IMO The black sections work well with the coupe But make it very difficult to spec a spider in a satisfying combo
My first comment on this having taken a deep breath, two dealer emails saying 2025 delivery assured if order today (that’s not showing the desire or they are being dealer optimistic) is I hate it form the pictures. Answer the question, good grief no. Had a look at F12 (miss mine and staggeringly beautiful), 812 not perfect but works - this, not for me. Of course, I reserve the right to about turn when see it in person but at £180,000 cost to change at least and £100k loss at least it’s not for me. Will wait a year until they settle out. To g that annoys me most - apparently (is it true or vicious rumours) man I I said paint the black ‘over his dead body?’. If I wish it my way …. That’s an issue as one suspect a fair number on here are reverse to people telling them what to do. So sad, I wanted to be justifying everything to myself and sending deposit. Instead why am I so angry at a new Ferrari? Discuss. PS no disrespect to anyone who loves it.
Could I politely request you annoy Mancini and remove the video black knight rider front stripe (you won’t unsee that now folks!) Super appreciated in advance. Rosso Corsa 322 if you feeling very bored haha
I think that by painting it in body color you get to emphasize the width and hips of the car. And so it looks more sporty and elegant. The thing is that it loses the wow factor. Futuristic effect. To explain my self. Many, if not most of us, are middle aged in 40tis or 50tis. We already have our taste, and deep love for the brand. So maybe not open to this type of "experiments. Most of us wish Pininfarina back. What about younger than us? I've showed the above photos to my 13year old son . He chose the one with black winglets without thinking twice. A jet plane. They want the youngsters to alsp like their cars.
It's a curious policy choice to impose a devisive and easy-to-change design feature on customers. But that's Ferraris perogative. It's the choice of words that rubs me the wrong way. If that's the policy, communicate it with a little tact. He comes across as arrogant and dismissive of any customers who dare to question his aesthetic. Perhaps it was a bad translation? I hope so...
I showed it to me eight year old who scowled and said it looks dumb. I showed it to my four year old who said "ooooooo, I love it". I think the next generations will be just as divided as we are.
Show them both photos , let them decide. My 4 year old sleeps i forgot about him. Interesting, all 3 of us agreed we liked more MC20 over 296, so we chose it. It is possible to get consensus God blessed them all.
The over my dead body comment is ridiculous. He talked as if he is an artist, yet he is just a paid employee. The car is a product of a whole team. Talks about arrogance. Well the sale number and media reception will determine the arrogance has basis or not
Yes, yes, especially the female reproductive system on the F12 stern - oh, what an incredible design! Ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, this is just a car design for the ages! And yes, the grass was greener before!
I just posted this on the second and newer thread dedicated to this car, but it's a follow-up to my original post on this thread: I said I wanted it to be beautiful...to capture that elusive smoke in the bottle, and be something I'd love to stare at for hours and be wowed by. Here's my take. At first sight of the reveal photos at 8:00pm EST, I was massively disappointed. It was a giant WTF moment. I hated the too-obtrusive, blacked-out "Daytona" nose, I hated what appeared to be an ungainly transition from the hood to the windscreen (looked too steep from one of the front photos), I hated what appeared to be the notch taken out of the rear with that blacked-out angle, and I absolutely wanted to vomit at the idiotic looking black delta wing shape that dominates the entire rear view in what appeared to be a most poorly thought-out manner. And those stupid side flaps, which apparently come up way sooner than you'd want them to... WTH, Ferrari?! A few hours passed, a very few videos appeared. Today, many more have arrived. Seeing now the car in video and not the ever-annoying Ferrari press images (although a few, this time, aren't so bad), I've come to a difference of opinion. This difference of opinion is not derived from a fanboy's need to delude himself into believing everything Ferrari does is great. I've been at this Ferrari game for a long, long time, and Ferrari certainly doesn't always make winners. I'm familiar with most every Ferrari ever made for the street, and I can honestly say I find, at most, 60% of them very attractive. I'm also honest enough to admit that some of the most celebrated of all Ferraris are nowhere near as attractive as most would have you believe in their group think adoration. I won't mention those cars, but I'm convinced most secretly know. Anyway, back to the subject at hand, I now find this new 12...weird, but in a great way. Weird like I found the '84 Testarossa as a 10 year old boy...my mom even bought me a model of one, and I wasn't thrilled. I so wanted the Countach model. The Testarossa looked weird and still does...but it does so as it always has...in the best of ways. It's intriguing to look at, and for this, I appreciate it (more than I did as a kid). I find myself looking at this new 12 in the same manner. In the span of one day, I already love the front, and that odd rear delta shape...I get it, now. It shocked me, yesterday, but I've quickly wrapped my head around its purpose and style...see more than I did at first...and actually like it. As a whole, I like this car more than any variation of the 812. The Spider version of this new car is truly beautiful. I believe it's the best looking front engine spider/convertible that Ferrari has made since ...well, since the 60s. Its profile is mesmerizing top up or down, and I actually think its top-up look is better than the coupe's in profile. Furthermore, it accentuates my disappointment in the Roma Spider...a car that could have been so much more. Yes, Ferrari, you royally screwed the promise of what that car could have been. I'm convinced this new 12 will be liked (truly, sincerely, honestly) far more than it is in the initial reactions. It's weird...it's not what I had hoped for...and that's because I wasn't aware that I would like something like this. I think this will be true for many people. Did Ferrari capture smoke in the bottle with this one. No. Looks like I'll still be waiting for that...but they also didn't fail my hopes, either. This is a cool car. A very cool car. And though it doesn't rank among my favorites, it's certainly not in that list of the 40%+ that I don't like the looks of at all. Nice work, Ferrari.
I just watched the top gear video on the release and I went from liking it but a little confused to now loving it. The video really shows the contours…I think the side view is fantastic. I am in…now the very long wait starts.
My AD is in Miami and we are connecting when he is back and I asked if I should sign and wire today and he said we can connect next week. As mentioned and confirmed by others, I think this will be a little tricky. I got the call on the PS but if there was a factory list here…sounds like I wasn’t on it. Has anyone heard of a factory list or did anyone get a call saying they were on one? I am not talking about a dealer coming up with their own list, I am talking about the pre screen like the PS. Fingers crossed for both of us, John
It’s funny how NOBODY has said they fell in love with the car instantly. At best it’s like ‘I was very disappointed at first, but then I came around a bit, and now I think it may not be absolutely terrible and I’m starting to think maybe it’s not that bad … maybe it’s ok’ LOL. Great design work Ferrari!
Good Luck to you! My dealer only received a few allocations for the first two years. I think he had to offer those before he could for me. Hopefully several of them are disgusted with it. I’m nowhere near VIP. Not enough cars and no time to run around getting event points! Plus I am mildly unsocial. [emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
That’s kinda funny. We are all f—-ing designers. The car is great, it’s got 12 cylinders, it will sell, be stunning on the road and f chatters will moan about the good old days [emoji849] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
So Ferrari died with Enzo? Name a car company that is still around that only makes three pedal, carburetor cars, have running boards and wooden trim. That’s what you guys sound like you want. This thread is a hoot. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I don't think that's right. I do hear a lot of people going through a process like you describe. Others just don't like it, and others are still processing it. It's definitely not universally and instantly loved like some predicted before the launch. But I did hear a lot of folks who sounded smitten immediately. And I think the unflattering renderings we saw first are to blame for some of the initial negative reactions. It seemed like the average reaction improved quickly as photos and videos (and in person sightings) started to trickle out. I'm certainly not in love. And I really, really want to be because I want that engine so badly and was looking forward to going nuts with a TM build. But I think others genuinely love it and I'm really happy for them and for Ferrari. It's great that Ferrari is making this car when so many other manufacturers have given up on this format. I'm rooting for this car, even if it isn't a design that speaks to me.
1. I agree that it’s great Ferrari still makes a car like this. 2. This design is a huge whiff. Ferraris are about many things but first and formost they are about emotion. This car does not elicit any passionate emotion. Because apparently that was not even its design priority. Its design priorities were to be a) novel and b) spare. 3. Even the name is almost clinical. Contrast the feeling one gets upon seeing or hearing the name “Superfast” versus “Cilindri” 4. Fully recognizing that one is a SUV and one is a Sports GT … the Purosangue is a far better, and much more emotional, design … and name … than this emotionally neutered ‘Ken Doll’ of a product.
