I finally got around to replacing the RPM senor in my 308 GTB QV. Hopefully it will solve the intermittent engine cut out that I started experiencing last fall where the ignition would cut out and tac drop to zero ever though the engine was still rotating, and all other electrics were good. But what a *****. Easy to get to the sensor but why did Ferrari bury the connector where it's next to impossible to get too, not to mention how they are routed. I imagine to an experience mechanic there may be short cuts. But doing it for the first time was a live and learn. Any way, done deal. Fingers crossed. I'm getting to old to DIY. (77 this March 30th and ordered my car March 30th, 1985).

 

That's my next project. Belts are sitting on my work bench.

 

Replaced York compressor O-rings between fitting and compressor and the two on the lines. Shrader valves also replaced.

Updated front top seal per Ferrari SB 90-17-10-80. This modification changes the configuration of the original seal which the top butted up against to the revised configuration which has the top sitting on top of the seal (like the rear). Though this was a factory recall it was never done on mine. Along with the seal update I refinished the windshield frame and the anodized moldings on the top and side windows. This update is quite a process and involved several days of work. I would think twice about doing it again. The reason I did it is the car got caught in a huge thunder/rain storm while parked the result being a huge amount of water leakage across the entire interior. Got caught in yet another storm after the mods and no leaks.

 

Hello. Not all today but in last few weeks.I finished installing rebuild front calipers and bled brakes. I repositioned my plug wires using new wire guides. Installed vintage BBS wheels.

 

I finally replaced the timing belts and tensioner baring. The carbs were out of sync, fixed that also. Car runs great now. Next I need to swap the tail lights out, someone put the red lights to the out side.
I have two noob questions. The oil pressure gage works but not till the motor starts to warm up, the light works. Is this normal? The second question. How on earth do you remember to not shift into revers when you stop? I trying but I know it will happen sooner or later.

 

Changed transmission fluid. Redline MTL.

 

Thanks, I will do it this week. No telling when the last time it was changed.

It is slightly better now, all the way around. Mine has always been a little peculiar. I keep the car in the basement in cold weather (soon to be moved to garages). I start it in the basement and move it out putting the transmission in neutral once out while I reset the radio because I always turn off the battery cut off switch when car is off for a week and radio loses its memory settings. Radio is a PITA to set. Then I shift to first and roll down the driveway shifting to second once car is moving about 10 mph. We live on a hill, so I let the hill move the car in second gear for about 300 yards to a stop sign at end. I stop, place transmission in first, make left turn and proceed. Sometimes, at that point, shifting to second is difficult so I skip it. Seems very odd to me that the shift to second while in the driveway is always silky smooth while the one after the stop sign sometimes has to be skipped to third. Sometimes it is silky smooth. Car has exhibited this tendency for many years. I have owned it since 1988. It's an '87 GTS.

 

Mine is a 328 from 1986 and sometimes the 2nd is difficult to engage, the warmer it is the better, but not always. Difficult to understand!
Although the previous owner gave me a lot of regular maintenance paper, I don't see that the gearbox oil was ever changed, so I thought the oil should be replaced anyway.

Second gear not working well till warm is very much a "thing" with Ferrari's, from the 60's or earlier until they had to fix it when sequential F1 transmission was introduced in the 90's on the 355. Choosing the exact right transmission oil is as important as how fresh it is. The second gear phenomenon is well documented below -- skip to 3:55 in the video:

 

1. Changed oil (Mobil-1 0-40 Euro Car Formula) and filter (Baldwin B253)
2. Changed gear oil (Redline MT 75-90)
3. Annealed all copper washers in the process.
4. Chasing down an oil pressure issue (increasingly higher with RPM s, where before was rock steady @ 85psi), so started with the easy part: inspected oil pressure regulator and replaced the spring. No luck. Now going to do the tedious knuckle busting bits: replace the oil sending unit and oil sensor while at it.

Huh, I haven’t thought about adapting Dino caps to my NTM’s, I will now. I did make adapters for my Dino nipple wheels. Send a photo with them on the coffin spokes.

 

Found a fuel leak... uhhh yeah... nothing like a little pipe that costs 300 bucks... of course that's a bargain compared to the $650 found on many other ferrari part sites.

Gotta love them Ferrari prices man!
