I had my 2014 458 ECU remapped to be more aggressive and replaced the OEM catback with an S-Line this week. Net result, my car went from a black lab to a pit bull, in a good way. Other than the appearance, the car is very different in sound and transmission. The low end (gear) torque is through the roof. Before this was done, I could ride the low gears up to 6 to 7K RPMs relatively smoothly, with the car exhaust making a bunch of noise. Now I seem to need to shift faster to avoid jerkiness from the high torque in the first few gears. Do I simply need to learn and get better/adjust my shifting to this more aggressive tuning, or is it that I can no longer stay in those lower gears as long as I was prior to this change?

I figured it out on day 2. 3rd gear is the new 1st gear. Just use the first two gears for parking, getting car out of garage, etc. But 3rd gear is the lowest gear while driving. And the sound improves immensely with this approach.

With the turbo V-8s,there is a huge hit of extra power available from an ECU retune. I wasn't aware that much could be done with the normally aspirated motors. What company did your ECU work?

ECU tunes can adjust a wide variety of parameters, including but not limited to, timing retardation/advancement mapping, fuel mapping (how much fuel per RPM, throttle position, gear, and engine load), throttle body position per pedal position, and if you're turbo, boost levels, wastegate and recirc behavior, max turbo speed, etc etc.

It's highly likely that the tune adjusted the throttle position. It's probably also advancing the timing more under partial loads. The combination of which means that the car works harder with less driver inputs, making it feel a lot more violent. If the TCU was tuned as well, then the gears can slam a lot harder.

Just make 10000% sure you're using the highest octane available and stay on top of maintenance items. The tradeoff for that extra power is safety and durability... the engine won't accept adversity nearly as well as stock.
