In theory it could be the fairer system.
But, qualifs would take longer to offer the 20 cars 3 laps each (warming up, flying lap, and slowing down).
Also what happend if the weather conditions change during that period ?

    William let's be precise.

Weather; that is fate, it is what it is.

Procedure would and should involve two timed laps.

Driver one starts his warm up lap, does his first banker lap then lets loose on his second timed lap.
The moment he crosses the finish line to begin his slowing down lap driver two comes out of the pits.
Driver one is obligated to let driver two past on the uphill section before casino square and not to dawdle so he has returned to the pits well before driver two finishes his first timed lap.

    Etc.

Yes it might take a little more than an hour but the fairness and entertainment value would be incomparably better. Everyone would get a fair chance.

As Montoya said when he got pole in, I think, 2003, "No one saw my lap."

True, tv missed it. That is so wrong.

In this Way it would be an event, a very exciting one as opposed to the crap shoot qualifying is now and nothing would be missed.

Well, try to explain that to the teams !
If a shower of rain falls after some cars have done their qualifs, and the rest cannot go near 4 seconds of their times. Not knowing in which order the cars would be released, there could be some serious losers among the top contenders there !!
Monaco is the worst circuit where you can expect to gain places from a low grid slot, no?

Having said that, it would be very exciting, if Liberty can sell it to the teams.

Yes, yes BUT most years Monaco is dry so the teams would accept it.

Very obviously there would be a previously agreed order of running, the small fry first, the top drivers last, be it based on fp3 times, championship positions or -to really throw things up in the air- a chance draw beforehand.

Of course it is the worst track for passing in the race AND for qualifying and that is exactly why this would make perfect and absolute sense.

I agree. If the weather is an issue they shouldn't try doing it. Imagine a Sauber or an Alpine on pole position?

Monaco isn't too narrow and slow, the cars have gotten way too big. For Monaco, the teams should be forced to run F2 cars.

This so called race should be a charity event with the F1 drivers in single make machines helping the untaxed wealth and celebs feel better about their lives lol. Abarth 500's one year then something else the next. 911s, then Renault Twingo's etc.
100% agree the so called F1 cars that are literally the size of SUV's simply dont fit at all. Have not for years. its just another 'Event' where Liberty uses 'racing' for Marketing to a crowd. This circuit does not support current F1 cars racing. Beyond absurd. If you have a circuit where cars cannot race its not a race lol. More of 'show'...........oh wait................. :)

Before, years ago, there were several F1 races that were not part of the World Championship.
I think Monaco should become a stand-alone race not counting towards the title.
I am sure that it would still attract a huge crowd, celebrities, and sponsors.

+1BILLION. The 'event' draws a crowd naturally due to location weather and perception of elegance and wealth. The dramatic rise above the harbour looks nice on the tele and in photographs. The 'Royal' mystique can still captivate. The 'racing' does not in general.

You were saying;-)?! For those too young to have experienced it the PROCAR series ran for a few seasons in the early 80's with F1 drivers on some GP weekends. It was hugely popular and the racing was intense. M1's have a wonderful sound so that helped.

Some of the best racing on the streets of Monaco were those events and the 911 SuperCup now.

Just like the Macau GP, with GT, Touring and F3 cars is a huge success in the Far East.

Maybe it should become a non-points, big-money "All-Star Race", like the one NASCAR staged last weekend at North Wilkesboro or the one IndyCar staged earlier this year in Thermal, CA.

It's a bit surprising how many drivers won their only Grand Prix at Monaco. Consider:

    Jean-Pierre Beltoise
    Olivier Panis
    Jarno Trulli

Interesting you say that as MANY years ago the computer company I was working for bought the previous year's Williams F1 car and were demoing VR when this was a new product and the only track they had was Monaco.

Everybody was either crashing or going the wrong way so my boss suggested I have a go as I was and am an F1 fanatic :)

Needless to say, the MANY late nights of watching F1 at Monaco I cleaned the lap with a reasonable enough time to stand for the entire promotion :p

    They didn't give me a trophy :(

I remember Beltoise's win; it was raining. JPB took the lead, and nobody was able to pass him.
Olivier Panis won by attrition; in the last lap, the leaders started to crash one by one, I believe.
