Marcel Massini is a Ferrari Historian who has documented the ownership history of 2067 GT. It does not mean he owned the car personally.

Flipping two words can change an entire meaning of a sentence.
"Documented ownership by marque historian Marcel Massini" versus the more factual, Ownership Documented by marque historian Marcel Massini.

On researching 2067 GT further, I was wrong about the body having incorrect details for its production date. The steel bodied street 250 GT SWBs got the quarter light side windows, roof vent and teardrop front wing indicators before the alloy competizione SWBs. Steel bodied SWB 2055 GT also has the roof vent and quarter light windows but not the teardrop indicators. Not sure that 2067 GT would have originally had the teardrop indicators but I'm sure Bacchelli & Villa knew what they were doing when they rebodied the car.

In the description, RM Sotheby's have missed some important information as indicated in the build sheets published in the info for the car, that 2067 GT has a Semi Competition engine with higher 9.5 compression, tipo 130 camshafts with 10 mm lift, bigger 40 DCL 6 Webers, velocity stacks and a ribbed aluminium competition gearbox.

Steve: As to the gearbox. This is another piece of incorrect information that will just not die. ALL SWB's up to about #3000 had an aluminum, ribbed case gearbox. The Comp cars used the SAME gearbox as the Street cars. I have researched this extensively and the stories about special competition gearboxes are not based in fact. Later SWB's used a cast iron cased gearbox for quieter operation and probably cheaper to produce.

To most people the aluminium ribbed gearbox, the SAME as the ones used in the competition SWBs is going to be a massive plus making the car more desirable and is a big omission from the sales blurb IMO. 99.9% of people will not know the above and will assume it has a steel, non ribbed street gearbox as used in cars after #3000. What about the semi competition engine? Did all steel street SWBs up to #3000 have the semi comp engine too? The RM Sotheby's text states that only the alloy bodied SWBs have the competition engine.

Steve: Without a major research effort, I can only comment in general. My feeling is the major defining factor in a "competition" engine is the camshafts. If the car was built with Tipo 130 cams, I would classify the engine as a Comp motor. Most early SWB's have Tipo 130 cams (up to about 2200). I think the term "semi-competition" engine is an "invented" term in order to sell cars. Over the years, I have seen SWB's stated as having "competition" motors only because they had velocity stacks instead of an air cleaner. Overall, it appears all SWB's had compression ratios between 9.2 and 9.6 to 1. The higher ratios do not necessarily align with the Tipo 130 cams. An individual engines compression ratio can be effected greatly by cylinder head casting variances, how low the valve seats are installed in the head and variances in piston final machining.

250 GT SWB 2067 GT at RM Sotheby's. Bid to 4.5 M GBP. Don't know if it actually sold at that. No mention at all of the Tipo 130 cams with 10 mm lift, 40 DCL 6 Webers, Velocity Stacks competition spec engine. What am I missing here?

Not at all clear during the auction what cars actually sold with the auctioneer only stating very few times that a car had sold.

Edit: Looks like not sold as I write as sold cars listed as sold on the RMS web site. As I write showing as price on request. See here.

2067 may have sold if RMS had advertised it correctly (unless they know something we don't?). An SWB with a comp engine and gearbox is certainly more interesting/desirable and worth more than a standard spec Street SWB, which is what it was advertised as.

Perhaps the market for cars of this era is softer than we think?

I agree Steve, but I am referring to the market for all cars of this era--street and comp alike.

My experience with RM is they do a pretty good job of due diligence in vetting cars they bring to auction. If something is said or not said, there is usually a reason.

I presume you are referring to 50s/60s cars, and in which case the market may well be weaker at the moment? But as we all know markets always fluctuate up and down. Seems to be up on Miura SVs at the moment, and what will be the next in or out thing?

So the engine may actually be standard spec, but the build sheets wrong? The gearbox in the car is definitely comp spec being ribbed aluminium.

Also, as per the build sheet, the engine on SWB California Spyder 1795 GT is definitely not competition spec, despite the build sheet OSSERVAZIONI saying Competition spec with normal camshafts, with RMS omitting the normal camshafts bit.

Steve we are both huge SV fans. Having said that, the result of the car in the Dare to Dream auction was stunning. Huge restoration bills but a less than pristine history. What the hell, SVs are finally getting the recognition they deserve--it just took 40 years or so.
