296 Values and Used Market

I’ve heard unveiling this year. I Think most people agree that there are no more collectible Ferrari (with a few rare exceptions). We are back to pre-covid times where everything will depreciate (even the VS series). Not sure if anyone is arguing against that. (I’m sure some will argue it but….)

I’ve gone into every car purchase planning on losing at least 20%. If I do better than that, it’s great, if I do worse than so be it. I completely agree, drive and enjoy cars!

 

Unveiling this year- deliveries in 2027. Always waiting for the next thing….getting boring Honeslty.

 

lol. I hate to admit this but I’m getting to the point in my life where I’m starting to lose interest myself. Been buying, collecting, trading cars for 20+ years and just starting to get over it (bored?).

I actually came to the realization last month on a recent track day. It wasn’t as fun as it’s been in the past. In my 30s it was the best, in my 40s it was still great. Now in my mid 50s my body hurts, got a headache and just started losing interest. There was someone at the track that was 66 and you’d think he was a kid with how much fun he was having. I told him how much I admire him for still pushing so hard. I just don’t see that for me.

 

If the VS has the XX treatment count me out. The entire appeal of the 296 for me is the classic beauty of it. A fixed wing on the car would ruin it totally.

 

I think any fixed wing on a Ferrari is just so unbecoming.

F40 and F50, notwithstanding. (But then those aren't really wings, more like "handles")

 

Agreed. The F40 and F50 were so perfectly integrated but with active aero it’s terrible design aesthetics to have a fixed rear wing.

 

Totally agree the SF90XX is a joke - slap a wing on it and a few ducts and charge $100k's extra. And it seems other that a small group of people - no one cares about the XX.

 

Likewise - and with almost all brands doing V6/8 + hybrid it all starts to seems the same with a different "skin". Uniqueness seems to have gone sadly

 

I think this is where Ferrari is missing the boat. Or the market. The 296 while not “exotic” is a good looking car. Understated. It would be an awesome daily driver. But not for 450k. I’d love to get one and use it as my daily but just can’t drop that much money on a depreciation item. This is why the mc20 which is in the 160s now seems appealing to me. Totally get it’s not as fast, as good etc etc but for the price- it’s good enough.

 

Wait till you hit your 70’s!

 

Same. Never made money on a car and don't plan on doing so. Takes a lot of luck and good timing, especially considering the tax, interest, insurance, etc. Almost no way to come out ahead unless you hold onto a rare high end brand for 30+ years.

The other thing Ferrari has historically tapped into is the ‘people always want what they can’t have’. But when you see 112 GTB’s for sale that axiom no longer applies.

247 488 for sale, 123 458 for sale, 186 F8 for sale. Does it apply to any of those? Once again, Ferrari has produced a record number of cars last year. 33% more than they did 5 years ago. We will continue to see a large number of new cars for sale across every model as they are producing a lot more cars per year.

I think a lot of people bought the most recent car thinking they were going to hold for 6 months and make a quick profit. They soon realized it’s not the same market as it was for the past 3 years (for any brand). The ironic thing about your statement is Ferrari is still selling every 296 they produce. It’s the second hand market that’s taking a beating.

Not meant to be directed at you, but how many people forget the market pre-Covid? In 2017 I bought my 488gtb and sold it in 2018 and lost 50k. In 2018 I bought a 812Sf and Sold it in 11 months and lost 40k. In 2019 I got my Pista and sold it in January 2021 and lost 35k. The point is the sellers have unrealistic expections and they are still stuck in the covid years. Once the pricing is adjusted you will see inventory move. The 296 is not an over msrp car and is probably msrp at best and within 6 months will be below msrp. This will hold true for every new car they produce. Same for other brands. How many people remember walking into a Porsche dealership and seeing 4-5 911 for sale and getting a 5-7% discount?? That market will return as well.

 

I think they have some room to go . Look at the GT. I was just offered the Modena for 60k off retail for a 2024 with 800 miles..
Maseratis are just a 30 percent or more off car within 12 months , same as Aston. Great cars, I truly like them both. But both falling knives value wise

the one car that seems to be very stubbornly staying high is the 911s. i have a gt3t but want a daily 997 / 991 and prices are not coming down like f8 im trying to unload.

Have you considered a 720? I think you get a lot more performance and prices seem to be falling on them. I love my 720, and honestly, there aren't many cars that depreciate more than a McLaren, but I think Maseratis are one of them. I think the sticker on the MC20 is way too high, pretty car but the performance numbers aren't there for a car at $300k.
