So here is a new one that I am having a tough time sorting out. When I roll the headlight switch back, they pop up and the parking lights come on. If I then put the switch in the headlight position (low beam), the headlights come on but they go down. I have replaced all relays and fuses, being sure to check the number on each. Anyone have thoughts on what is causing this? Thanks
Could be a lot of things, but the first thoughts that came to mind was that you have a broken solder joint in your light stalk (there is a thread in the DIY section on how to fix this ) or the fuse board is delaminating if it hasn't been replaced, it would be helpful if you told us your year model as well. Alden
I actually fixed that last year and was fine. I took part the stalk again, and it looks good and it will even make contact and respond if I touch the 2 connectors together. Its as iff the response of the lifter motors is reverse of what it should be.
Steve when I roll the headlight switch back, ONLY the parking lights come on. When I move the stalk down one detent, the pods pop up and the low beams are on. When I move the stalk all the way down, the high beams are on. To my understanding, the pop-ups should not be out with the parking lights. Can you confirm with your owner's manual that what happens on your car is correct (other than the retraction issue)? US car? Federalised Euro? Euro?
Exactly! Thats how they use to work. It is a US car. I did check the manual and it should be exactly as you state. Im not sure what went wrong. Possible incorrect relay swap? The shop manual has a labeling mistake for the locations of relays "P" and "T", so I am wondering if the relay for my lifters is a different part number than what the book says.
An easy thing to try (if a US version) would be moving relay C (the ...101 wiper speed relay) to the relay U (relay for headlight lifting motors with low beams on) position and then relay D (relay for headlight lifting motors) position and see if that makes any difference -- just a thought. (Relay letters and names as show in your 308/84 OM.)
FIXED! Steve - you will never believe this but my "T" and "U" are opposite. Just like that fuel pump relay you discovered. My "T" is NOT ignition as the manual states. My "U" is my ignition and my "T" is the lifting motor. I swapped them and now I am good! As always, thats for that brain of yours! My car is damn near perfect! Thanks everyone for the speedy replies.
I always say 90% of the time if there's something wrong with our cars, it's in the fuse/ relay box, I don't know why I didn't think of going there first. I had a hard start cold problem a while back, and I simply replaced the cold start relay with a new one and it solved it! I've solved lots of other little problems by fiddling with that box, and I have a GT parts fuse board too! But the relays do go bad. Alden
I think I am going to write the actual letter number on each crusty old relay. Will make life easier.
If you have the original old metal relays, you probably should replace them with modern Bosch units. Alden
I never go by the manual, I have Afterburners' drawings in color and just look at those! It's worth getting the set. Believe me! Alden Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, it seems F got those two relay positions wrongly switched in both the 308/84 OM and 317/84 wiring diagram for your year/model/version (but afterburner got it correct in his redrawn wiring diagrams as Alden posted). PS Don't use the Mondial8/QV "shop manual" for anything electrical on your car -- that WSM only applies to 1983 Mondial QV.
My US model 1988 3.2 cabriolet was wired with the fog lights Euro style! The button on the dash does nothing, but when you pull on the stalk you get the "flash to pass" European style fog lights operation. Maybe they didn't have enough espresso for lunch at the factory that day, or maybe just too much wine, LOL! Alden
