I'm in the market for a Ferrari 458 Spider, and during my search, I've noticed a trend that's puzzled me. Many of the 458 Spiders I've come across have had 5 or 6 previous owners according to their CarFax reports. This seems a bit high for such highly regarded car.

Given that the Ferrari 458 Spider is known for its performance, sound, design, and overall driving experience, I would have expected most owners to hold onto them longer. So, I'm curious:
    1. Why do so many Ferrari 458 Spiders seem to change hands so frequently?
    2. Should I be concerned about the number of previous owners when considering a purchase? (maybe these are the problem cars, while the truly great ones don't change hands???)
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

I bought a Speciale that had 7 owners listed. There were not 7, as any time it was registered in a new state or sent to a new dealer, etc, it was reported. Truth was closer to maybe 3. Car was checked out and perfect, so didn't care.

I am the 3rd owner of a 2015 Spider purchased in December of 2019. The first two owners drove it 5,200 miles and I just turned 11,000 miles. I love the vehicle but then also fell in love with a 296 Spider. Never owned a new Ferrari before so in July of 2022 placed an order for a 296 Spider. The 458 will be a stepping stone to a new Ferrari purchase.

This doesn't seem too uncommon for me with these sort of high-end cars. A lot (but not all - I certainly don't!) of the purchasers who can afford cars like these have so much money that they will just chop and change for the next new model after a year or two of ownership, I suspect.

Or put another way, too much money and not enough brains. I'll toss in there the people that really don't have the money, end up getting overextended and out the door they go.

Just got rid of a Ferrari. Had it less than ninety days. It was a piece of junk. So yes they can go through owners.

Ferraris less than 15 years old seem to follow a similar trend of owners. Our local DFW crew got together 20 years ago with 328's, Testarossa's, and older (they were 15+ years old at the time). Most of us still have the same car now.

Owner #1 - Relationship with Ferrari, buys retail, trades back to dealer at 6-12 months to favor dealer or flips for the profit.
Owner #2 - No Relationship with Ferrari, but has to have the latest and greatest even if $50k over MSRP.
Owner #3 - Can either be like Owner #2 or Owner #4.
Owner #4 - Value minded, still wants something new, the car is now below MSRP! A year later oh **** some expensive things are breaking and the car is depreciating like a rock, get me out!
Owner #5 - Car is off warranty and expensive to maintain and I'm still losing money monthly depreciation.

There are many things contributing to the high quick turnovers until the car reaches that 15+ year mark. The cars show many owners and then look at the history of owners, just view FerrariChat profiles all the users bragging about owning 20+ Ferraris along with many other makes. I don't have anything against it, but women, cars, and watches I'm a keeper.

This was the scenario with my 458. Carfax showed 7 owners, but 3-4 were listed as “dealer taking into inventory” or something like that.

Yes seriously. Had a Roma that was possessed. Dash and tablet screen flickering in and out or the tablet would go black and stay that way until the next day. More chimes and bells then a doorbell store. Navigation went out and error message was to see service department. Had the latest and greatest updates and it did nothing. Max view was a feature that was removed with a software update because it was too laggy. I suspect the hardware wasn't up to the task and no software update was going to fix that. There's more but that's enough to get the point across.

That's a bummer. The wife and I were at an event that was at Ferrari dealership; she saw the Roma and liked it, so the next thing I know we are sitting in it and firing it up with a sales person. I didn't like that basically everything was a screen and what pushed me overboard was the fact that lumbar had to be controlled with the central ipad looking screen. So that is one of things that launched our search for the 458.

A drop dead gorgeous car that was ruined by half baked electronics/UI that wasn't even close to ready for prime time. This car is a true example of: "beauty is only skin-deep."

Been in this business a long time and seen lots of changes to owner demographics. They are younger for one thing. More interested in todays latest and greatest. Never intended it to be a long time ownership. The market has changed and allows flipping for profit or at least flipping for very low cost to get into a different auto experience. Lots of owners not a great thing but concentrate on condition. This type of owner history often generates few miles and cars are usually used gently.

Demographics have changed and because of tech the cars have changed as well, for better or worse. That old perpetually broken car that Jim had in his garage for 20 years is not the same as the cars now which come out with a new model every 5 years with a completely new set of gadgets and upgrades. There is also the concept that these cars come with some insane maintenance bills because of those same gadgets and aren't really friendly to DIY, people lose their appetite for them quickly as they underestimate that. Lots of factors and for the 458 specifically that are even more specific to the car.

Personally I won't buy a car with many owners. Being 1st or 2nd owner will do for me.

To answer your question of many owners... well there are many reasons: no clue what they doing, what they buying, confused, lack of decision making, buyer's remorse, not meeting expectation, so forth and so on ;)
Best choice is to buy a car from 1st owner. I even know 20 or even 30 years old Fcar with single owner. These are the cars to buy!!

End of the day its your choice and go with your decision/choice/gut feeling.
    :)
