To be honest, it’s not a common gearbox fault. It can happen, but weird that it has happened in a car with stated 20k kms. The R button is way too sticky as well!!

My chuckle for this; was that someone bidding on it was talking up the car, then the next minute states he is mates with the seller. All seems too weird!

$50K sounds like an accurate repair cost estimate and it probably is cheaper to buy a new Getrag box than ship a broken one to the UK and back.

458's have other problems too, including the exhaust system. There's an electric pump which blows air into the heads and out via tiny holes in the exhaust ports. These holes accumulate soot and eventually block, giving an engine fault light. Substantial labour cost to rectify.

Finally I can't forgive Ferrari for continuing the rubberised switch paint, long after the problem was known.

Such a shame, the 458 is a fabulous drive.

A friend of mine was quoted $22k to replace the auto in a 9yo 3 series bimmer. On checking elsewhere they were told yep that's the go they don't get repaired any more, cheaper to replace.

    Yep.

A couple of years ago I had a BMW that started to do some iffy things gearbox-wise.
My mechanic got it going and then told me to get rid of it because next time it would cost more than the car is worth to sort.
    I took his advice.
Exactly the same thing happened with one of my brothers Audis, and there would be thousands of similar stories.

So there’s nothing special about modern Ferraris.
If - in the unlikely event - a 458s gearbox ****s itself and it costs $40k to fix? So what.
That’s less than 10% of the cars value. Whoop de doo.
Anyone who can spend half a million buying a car should be able to maintain it properly, and if they can’t; don’t buy the ****ing thing.

That said, the whole sticky switch caper is utterly ridiculous if it’s still going on.

In Greg's case it's not the paint that is the cause of the stickiness.

I reckon 90% of people who buy these $500K Ferraris can't afford to drop $40K on a gearbox change.

These $500K Ferraris would be hocked to the eyeballs.

Maintaining it with regular $2000 annual services is a little bit different to dropping $40K on a gearbox change when it blows up.

That's big money in anyone's language. But I do understand what you're getting at.

That may well be true but it gets no sympathy from me.

How much does it cost to run and maintain a $500k aircraft (ask me how I know :() or a $500k boat.
    Or a $500k girlfriend…

Im not defending a $40k gearbox, just trying to put it in perspective.
You buy these things, you pay what it costs.

Yeh I dunno, I wouldn't be so sure of that. Sure there would be some, but I don't think it would be anywhere near 90%.
