599GTB oil temp

Hi All
Is it normal for the oil temperature to rise to between 120° (248F) and 130° (266F)? The temperature then stabilizes at 110°-120°, in the city it can rise to 130°. But it never goes in to the red range.

What can cause a high oil temp.?

 

Does not sound high to me. Oil is not like water and is not going to boil off at those temperatures. It actually works better at the temperatures you note and those temperatures get rid of any moisture in the oil.

 

This is how the manual describes it:

Oil temperature gauge:
- Blue = Oil T < 80 °C (176 °F)
- Green = 80 °C < Oil T < 155 °C
- Red = Oil T > 155 °C (311 °F)

There's also a separate warning light for high temperature

 

It may also depend on the air temperature and for sure the driver. So Switzerland should be comparable to Germany. In my opinion 130 Celsius is quite high for normal driving, even in heavy traffic.

Owning a 599 for some years now, the oil temperature of my car is about 100 Celsius driving trough Munich.

I know 130*C is not causing damage or similar, but I'm wondering how the oil temperature behaves on other 599s. What also concerns me is why the oil temperature is so high. Mine was recently inspected and Ferrari reported no abnormalities.

 

You do have an oil cooler/radiator under the coolant radiator. You might want to check and make sure there is no paper or a plastic bag blocking the cooler.

 

Good idea. The original grill tends to pick up a bunch of stuff, including leaves.

 

One of the reasons I went to the GTO grill.

 

I went to see if something is blocking the cooler and nope… nothing

Actually, what happens is that leaves and debris get sucked in between the radiator and the AC evaporator and oil radiator.. when I had my radiator replaced, I was shocked at the amount of dry leaves in between them not sure how you would get them out other than compressed air ... and using a lot of it. but I doubt that would cause that much of temp increase.

According to the gauge on your vehicle, your oil temperature seems a little higher than normal (is it always like this?) but you are still not in the red zone, so I don't think there is anything to worry about. I used to have a 599 and the oil temperature of my vehicle was generally around 90-110 depending on driving and weather conditions (sometimes it could drop to 80 in cool weather and highway driving). Only once, in very hot weather and urban traffic, did it get very close to 120, but other than that, the situation was as I mentioned above. In your case, as I said, there is nothing to worry about or to check the car or take precautions. You shouldn't forget that you drive a v12 car

 

Thank you guys for your feedbacks, I'll keep an eye on this gauge.
I checked all the gaps around the oil cooler even with an endoscope, no debris and no dry leaves.
The highest temp i've seen was 140, and it never went higher.
Some Ferrari-specialists say that's good for the engine so the oil can do it's magic, some say that's too much. As long as it does not exceed to the red or near the red I'll be able to live with it.
