Official book collectors thread

It looks like shipping to the U.S. is not available except for a minimum order of €40. Maybe potential US buyers would be interested in a group order.

 

I would be interested in doing something along those lines. Having said that, I have my concerns about this book. It has been "in the works" for ages. Now that it's here, it is a 6x8 inch format bilingual paperback with 176 pages and 13 photos. That works out to roughly 85 small pages per language... I fear that this book may not offer that much beyond what has already been covered in Brenda's various interviews over the last 30 years.

 

You may be right but I will be buying a copy anyway and it isn't very expensive.

I imagine it will be available through the usual suppliers in due course but here it is on the publishers website in case there are different shipping options, although normally shipping from Italy (to the UK for me) seems to be quite expensive in my experience.

Just received it, only very quickly browsed it for the time being... seems worth the buy.
I've always been a big fan of the Daytona, although I failed to consider buying one during the short period when the market price and my financial capacities were aligned.
Amazingly, that's only the second book fully dedicated to the Daytona I get - the first one, on the right, is 40 years old and is apparently a translation of a Japanese book.

And you should go for the splendid little book by Gerald Roush and Pat Braden from the 1980ies. As well, there is a little book in the SuperProfile series from the 1980ies by Nathan Beehl.

 

I got my copy of the Philippe Daytona book about ten days ago (I bought it with Lufthansa/Swiss Air miles and "paid" Swiss Francs CHF 75.00, so in a way it cost me "nothing") . I think it is more of a coffee table photo book. Most of the pix have been obtained from Bonhams auction house, plus there are a few well known ones taken by UK photographer Neill Bruce during the build process at Scaglietti's and then some of the known Peter Coltrin bw pix (Klemantaski today). There's very little about the engine, mechanical and frame side. On the other hand there is a large section about Daytona replicas. Some of the modified and customised Daytonas have been covered but there's still several missing. And there is zero registry/list with chassis numbers or colors, or dealers, etc.
Basically the same amount of information and more can be found in Gerald Roush/Pat Braden's book Daytona, published by Osprey 1982.
A nice book overall but I also think it is a big chance missed.

Any opinions on it? It's difficult to establish any information on which four restoration projects are documented in this book. One is said to be a 250 GTO project, and one of the very few sample pages on the web shows a 250 TR and a 250 GT SWB (at least I think so).

There are not four restoration projects documented.

Thank you very much! Some descriptions said the book deals with four projects including 250 GTO, so your clarification is highly appreciated. I would be more interested in specific projects.

 

As said in post 7160 the book shows lots of photos of the 16 shops I listed, it is sort of a promotion/marketing book for these well known Italian artisans and restoration specialists, with many pix by Angelo Bianchetti, Italian motorsport and Ferrari photographer. Photo quality is very good, very detailed pix.

Very difficult to say. Everybody has his own budget and his own expectations. I cannot remember how much I paid five years ago when it came out. Maybe someone even gifted it to me, I just don't know anymore. Over the many years I have bought books for 5 $ and I have also bought Ferrari books for 20'000 $ (twenty grand). I like the book because it contains material about many people and their shops I personally know in and around Modena.

Thank you Marcel for reading my book and sharing your opinion. As said by LVP488, there has not been books about the street version Daytona for decades. In 2018, for the 50th anniversary of the Daytona, I expected someone to publish a very good book about it : nothing happened… even in the best publishers mentionned in this thread.

That’s why I decided to write and show what a wonderful story this car had, with recent color pictures and more or other information than what we usually read (in magazines for instance, even specialized). Some interviews, photos or anecdotes had not been put together in the Braden/Roush, Frère/Nye or Beehl very good books. Chapters about replicas, adverts or movies showing the car are so not common in the Ferrari literature, are they ?

I don’t claim this is the ultimate book about the Daytona, for sure. Some things can be missing for top experts, yes. As you say this book is not expensive. This means that I had to respect the publisher’s template, choose what to include from the databases that were opened to me, and what I couldn’t « afford ».

I really thank Leonardo Fioravanti, Edgardo Michelotti (son of Giovanni), Mike & Colleen Sheehan , winning drivers like Cyril Grandet, Dominique Bardini, Jean-Claude Andruet, John Morton for sharing their memories, and of course Bonhams for their very nice pictures : they really helped.

Until now, many Ferrari or Daytona fans that read the book told me they had discovered something about the car inside. I hope some FerrariChat members will also find it interesting. If there is a new edition (english ?), I will do my best to add what some of you expect.

New to me too, and a lovely old film. Thank you for posting that.

 

It's funny how trends in automotive books happen on one particular subject and become the flavour of the month.

Currently it seems to be NART and the Ferrari Daytona.

A year or so ago it was the Ferrari 250 GTO and prior to that was the Lamborghini Miura.

After seeing DK Engineering's latest video and the future releases of Porter Press I'm predicting the Ferrari 275 will be next.
