I am looking for a 308 QV engine and transaxle. I have an 85 QV that is in need of a full rebuild. The engine in the car was rebuild many years ago by the PO following a full failure - the engine was rebuilt using a 328 block and modifications. Since I need to rebuild the engine I would like to try to find an existing 308 QV that I can put in versus attempting a rebuild on the existing “unique” engine.

    Thank you in advance

What happen to the original engine, and have you tried some of the Ferrari used part source like T Rutland, GT Car Part, and FerrParts?

I don’t have full story on the original engine but a failure that cause the original block to have to be replaced with a f105c (328) block but the remaining 308 components intact (heads etc) - ran well - good compression then a tensioner bearing failed on me, belt slip, “bang bang bang” - well - here we are now

The issue is you won't quite know the state of the donor motor you find. I would recommend rebuilding your motor. The liners can be sent to Millennium cylinder liner to be bored and replated, send new pistons/rings with the liners and they will size them. You can even bump the compression ratio a bit to 10:1 or so, they run well. Or is it just the top end that has gone south? Bent valves a lot of the time leave the bottom end alone sans sometimes a dent in the piston.

If it was a simple belt failure I bet with a few valves it can be running again. The 4 valves have small valves, low compression and not a lot of lift so typically it just gently bends a few out of the way.

Got her apart - interesting- 2 of the 3 locking nuts on the tensioner came off - that was the rattling sound - I think I might have avoided disaster - now need to go through and make sure that the belt didn’t skip - next weekend - kid duty now

Yep, 4 bent valves from a 308 QV belt failure. Two intake, two exhaust. You pretty much have to put them in a drill and spin them slowly to see the bend.

What diagnosis has taken place? I am also curious. Why do people struggle to get the A/C compressor out and the belt cover off having to work around a hood that just falls off by removing 4 bolts and a water pipe held in with 2 hose clamps. Some people like to work really hard so they can avoid really simple tasks.

Ah, Ok, so not my old car. I had an engine block replacement back in the late 90's. I bought the car unaware that it had been so severely overheated that the block warped... I have it to this day as a coffee table... only found out when driving at Roebling road - Wade Williams actually was driving and said "oh when we get the car back at the dealership I'll put in a new oil pressure sending unit - yours looks like its going bad... problem was the sender was fine - the car had very low oil pressure... when they tore it down they found the crank cap laying on the windage tray... and they bolted it back together and then it would not turn! so new block from Canada... rebuilt it and I drove it for 3ok more miles. It was a Jonah car... lots wrong with it ... horrible first Ferrari experience.

I thought it could have been... but no. not sure who bought that car. I wish them well. I did the best I could to fix all the gremlins in it. when I traded it in on my 328 - it was running about as good as it ever did... better radiator, better A/C fresh injectors, cleaned out FI system, all new hoses... new cam belts, water pump, etc... the only thing I did not get to was the fuse block... that would have been next. They guy who had it before me - used to track the car - abused it big time... when it ran it was a great car... but it had a lot of issues.... I wish the current owner well!

I remember your story when you were driving it to church one morning. And later when Ron called you and asked if you were sitting down first.

Those are two different occasions... Ron called me from FOA - to tell me about no oil pressure - that was the huge rebuild! the other one was when the belt let go... all the teeth came off and bent all the valves on the rear bank... That story is documented here somewhere. My dad bailed me out the first time... 2nd time It was all me - just as I was in the middle of a job change... what fun!
