Is Pérez's time at Red Bull over?

Barring a miracle result at the Belgian Grand Prix, Sunday's race at Spa may well be Pérez's last for Red Bull. Multiple sources at the team feel that it must make a decision on Pérez's future during the summer break, which begins on Monday.

Sources have told ESPN a pay-off for Pérez would be in the region of $5 million. There's been a lot of speculation about whether Red Bull could afford to lose the financial backing Pérez brings from Mexico, but a tipping point appears to have been reached in that regard. First there's the estimated $10 million difference between finishing first and second place in the constructors' championship. Then there's the bonus money Red Bull would miss out on from major partners should it fail to win that title. And then there's something that is easily overlooked: Pérez's crash-filled first half of the season has accumulated a hefty repair bill for the team, a considerable headache in the restrictions of the cost-cap era.

Tensions within the team have been bubbling away. One major flashpoint came in the hours after Pérez spun out during qualifying for the British Grand Prix. According to sources who saw the exchange take place, technical director Pierre Waché and other senior engineers had an animated conversation with team principal Christian Horner. Those sources suggested concerns were raised about whether the team could win the constructors' championship if Pérez were to remain. The 34-year-old Mexican's poor form is now openly talked about in the Red Bull hospitality unit during race weekend, and tellingly, no one can adequately explain his decline.

Pérez failed to score a point at Silverstone and then crashed out of qualifying in Hungary, although he at least enjoyed a solid Sunday, climbing from 16th to 7th and staying out of trouble. Red Bull was also buoyed by the pace he had shown on Friday, although making such a big point about that smacked of desperation. The usual caveat to his Hungarian Grand Prix applies: his recovery drive was in the quickest or second-quickest car on the grid against a cluster of midfield cars. He should not have been anywhere near that situation in the first place.

I shall be very surprised if there is not an announcement made at some point over the summer break that Perez will no longer br driving the RB. The question is who will take his seat?

We should here it sometime soon right after the BelgianGP.

IF Perez crashes out on his own or doesn't get into the points on race day, he is sure doomed.

It still remains that they are not too sure who to put in the seat to replace Perez.

My guess is that Horner will try to put Ricciardo in the car, as his last chance.

I have no idea if Max has a say in all this.

Out of Ricciardo, Lawson and Tsunoda It should be Yuki based on performance and experience but he is too much of a loose cannon emotionally so they are reluctant to choose him.

    Lawson would be my choice.
Racing Bull (Toro Rosso) doesn't fill its role as a springboard to Red Bull anymore.

My gut feeling, and after reading their 3 choices, it's going to be Ricciardo. IF it's Ricciardo, this will be a make-or-break decision for him and ultimately will be his demise should he under perform.

I think if they move Ricci to MaxBull he is gone anyway. Its a nice send-off unless he just obliterates what Perez was doing. He is a safe pair of hands to end the idiocy of keeping Perez around and increasing the repair bill to 5mil lol.

Yes I expect to see Daniel in Perez's ex seat and Lawson to Toro Rosso or whatever they are called this week...Minardi;-)?

I think Perez is incapable of mind management. As a youth racing in England he was known to have no discipline and had a very messy apartment. One of the staff of a team he was racing for back then mentioned that.

He was also IIRC the very first F1 person (not just driver) to catch Covid because he stupidly ignored all safety precautions during a trip.

Yeah 2 loose cannons for drivers would be way too much.

Adrian Newey’s manager Eddie Jordan has told Red Bull that it is “far too late” to ask the F1 design legend to reconsider his decision to leave the team amid their current F1 2024 inconsistency.

    Bold hypothesis.

A new Marko’s special in the making :
Hadjar replacing Perez next year ?

PS : Hadjar is highly rated by Marko which defines him as a « little « Prost..

Hadjar just won the main F2 race this morning, his 4th win of the year and he now has a big points lead as his main rival broke down today. So yes he is favorite for the F2 title this year and thus a possibility for RB next year. More pressure on Daniel and Perez in the Red Bull musical chairs....

I'm unconvinced on Hadjar so far.

I find Aron far more impressive...

If the goal is to replace Perez with someone who can consistently score a lot of points while following team orders and not being totally erratic, I think Ricciardo is the least bad choice for the remainder of 24.

maybe put Lawson in the car full time in 25 (and at RB to replace Danny for the rest of this year)

Is Red Bull really declining right now ?
Spa was one of their strongest track since 2022..
    Something is happening for sure.
