So I go to the Ferrari dealership and ask for 10 quarts of motor oil so I can change my oil on 355. I am given 5W-40 recommended for Maserati engines and told this is what’s used on Ferrari oil changes. My question is does this sound like the correct oil made from natural gas.

Nothing wrong with that choice. 0-40 or 5-40 is the right thing. As far as brand goes just be aware there are more prejudices surrounding motor oil than anything else on planet earth. All of the name brands make a good product.

By the way. Net time go to Wallmart. There is no cheaper way to buy motor oil and its the exact same stuff in the bottle.

Is there a reason one would go to a Ferrari dealership to buy oil? I'm also curious what they charge....$80/quart?

I like the Motul 8100 5w40. Or liquiMoly 5w40. A bit pricey, but it's really good stuff.

It is not correct oil made from natural gas as this oil is fully synthetic but it should be ok.

Over the last couple of decades there have been some truly epic threads on motor oil in the 355 section.

Everyone here has a favourite and an opinion on which oil is the best, not to mention additives, so you’ll not get a “consensus”. It is a topic that seems to ignite quite some passion.

Personally I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40. It is recommended by Ferrari and I can get it in 5l jugs for €35 when I’m passing through France, thus making 2 oil changes/year a no-brainer.

Sorry, I completely misunderstood the question. I was thinking of mineral ("natural") vs. synthetic engine oil. I realised that we are talking about engine oils made from natural gas via a synthetic process.

Is that price including sales tax? I See that 5 quarts is a little under 5 litres, so in the end, the prices are not so different if there is a sales tax to be added.

As for the $40m from Shell, is that for all the F1 sponsorship too, or just to use the little horsie on the engine oil? Anyway, sounds like a sweet deal for Ferrari.

Please share what you paid. That same Penzoil is $12/quart at chain autoparts stores.

Which is why you buy it at Walmart. :)

Personally, I use what ever 5w40 Euro is cheapest at Walmart. Usually this.

    I will say this::
    a) if you don't get the oil up above 250ºF--it does not really mater
    b) if you do get the oil up above 270ºF--it does

In the case of (b), the oil Ferrari originally specified for F355 has an HTHS of 4.2 cP in a 5W-40 weight grade.

Back in the early 00's there was an Ester based 5W-30 oil with an HTHS of 4.2 (it was an ester base oil; can't remember if it was RedLine or AMSoil) I used several time on the track in the midst of Texas summer heat (107º). The thinner oil ran 4ºF cooler than the 5W-40 M1 TDT I ran before. You can find 10W-50 oils today that do not have this 4.2 cP HTHS rating.

But modern oils are shying away from telling you what the HTHS ratings are.

Also modern oils assume that the valve train is supported by bearings (instead of flat surfaces) so while our engines need ZDDP (900-1000ppm or so for street use, 1300 ppm if racing) the "powers that be" are slowly degrading the ZDDP levels which may not properly protect the F355 engine.

A timely thread for my situation right now, and something for your amusement...

When replacing the gearbox oil, I always flush through first with 2qts of nice, new, expensive Redline, and allow it to drain onto the garage floor. Then, and only then, remember to reinstall the drain plug!

Dunno 'bout you guys... but I wake up each morning hoping/expecting to be a tiny bit smarter than I was yesterday, and then crap like this happens, and i wonder if I've already peaked and now on the downhill slide!!:(

    Onwards.

Haha. Don’t feel bad. Those of us who do our own work have all been there in some shape or form. Even the pros have days like that occasionally. It’s only human to have the occasional hiccup.

On the bright side, you’ll eventually grow to appreciate the unique aroma of gearbox oil in your garage.
