I’m trying to imagine having that. It is bad enough having a backhoe reverse beep! LOL.

I was racing in an era before shift lights and beeps in the earpiece. I would use the tach on straights, particularly early in a session. Not on downshifts, and not if upshifting on exit, both of which I would do on feel and sound (and if I had to upshift on exit, odds are I was short shifting). But on the straights, if you could get an extra couple hundred revs by monitoring the tach, why not?

After a couple laps, though, I wouldn't pay careful attention to the tach. Hearing, feel, peripheral vision, geographical landmarks, etc. meant I was pretty zeroed in and - right or wrong - didn't think I needed to continue watching the rev counter on every upshift. I'd just check periodically to keep my gut feeling in calibration.

It's worth noting, however, that I was driving lower powered open wheel cars at the time. Less power, lower red line, fewer gears than my modern F-cars. So the revs didn't climb as frenetically. I'm not sure how I would have handled a car like ours without the benefit of shift lights.

In any event, I do like the look of an "analog"* tach, even if it's largely decorative at this point.

    ---

    * Yes, I know they're fly-by-wire now.

Oh, one other point. It helps a lot having the tach oriented correctly with the needle pointing straight up at redline. It always surprised me that Ferrari and other manufacturers don't do this.

Anything I've ever shifted was done by sound and feel. With these new reliable cars you only need the speedometer to keep from going to jail and the voltmeter to know when its getting time to muscle that battery out again. All other gauges are really decorative. That said, a dash full of analog gauges is sublime.

I saw the 12C coupe for the first time yesterday. A static display on a showroom floor. I love the fact that Ferrari is introducing a new front/mid engined V12. Having said that, my first visual hit was that of a full scale Hot Wheels. Lots of impact, but not much for voluptuous beautiful lines. I couldn’t really warm up to it. Just my opinion FWIW. Maybe over time this will change.

If you warm up to it and let a design grown on you, you are letting familiarity and repetition take over. It happens to the best of us and sometimes, it IS actually warranted. But in this case, I’d say, trust your first instincts…

Was just offered one. My response was like why is this better than my 812? Or even as good? No response…

Haha, good question! No response at all? That’s out of the norm since most dealers are very good at sales. You really stumped them with that one!

It's newer, faster, more modern interior, more horsepower ... I mean they could give you a number of reasons ... perhaps they didn't want to risk pissing you off :)

One might reasonably argue the more modern interior is a net negative.

Exactly right, newer isn't always better. The new interior is way too techy with all those touch sensitive buttons on the wheel. Faster with more horsepower? I bet most owners cannot notice any difference on the roads. Even on track, it's gonna take a real professional to see and make any real difference.

I think the biggest selling point is that glorious engine. Not that it's that different from the 812, but I'd never complain about another 500rpm.

Cutting against that are the bigger dimensions, higher weight, more muted exhaust, touch screens and the big jump in MSRP.

Looks are subjective, but opinions are clearly divided.

How these things net will vary for all of us. My guess is that if you don't think the styling is an improvement over the 812, it's going to be a tougher-than-typical sell.

Personally, I hope the car does very well, but that they still get the message that the design is offputting to many of us.

I bet speaking for myself the 12C will attract folks over 50 because of its retro vibes that’s what I love about it:) curious how accurate my assumption is..it does no replace my 812 GTS instead gives me a retro Ferrari 12 Cilindri :) that has a totally different vibe of the 812

I actually got the feeling they aren’t seeing a lot of migration to the 12 C, from the 812 owners, so they are better off trying to sell those who don’t have them. I mean there is a lot to be said about getting to design your own car. I just can’t get over the wheels on the new car and that rear end looks like it’s just too much. Then I saw an unloading video apparently in London and the car was barely fitting in the entryway to the Dealership. I know having an 812 it’s already a very wide car…

and let’s face it the superfast is a beautiful, clean design, and that non-GPF exhaust note is to die for.

Well in that case, why keep building new cars. Let’s just recycle the old, better stuff forever [emoji15]

Newer CAN be better, the potential to actually be better is there and manufacturers are striving for it everyday. But only when true innovation and or the right design choices are made. Manufacturers won’t always get every iteration right on point which is why we all have our favorites! In fact, their job is getting tougher and tougher because true innovation is hard to come by nowadays (unless you are Koenigsegg) and also, modern cars in general are so friggin’ good for the most part that the task for design teams to greatly improve upon them is SO much harder - especially using old tech and regurgitating the same thing in a different body.

The interior has VERY POOR ergonomics, having driven 296 GTB, using navigation or changing temperature is a nightmare, not mentioning changing music. I wish there was at least haptic feedback.

Personally, I like the looks of modern screen dominated cockpits, and would consider that worth upgrading, but there's something about previous era of design that is hard to beat. Had that Italian line to it.

You are absolutely correct that most people can't tell the difference ... but do you know who knows EXACTLY how much horsepower difference these cars have?

812 owners. Especially those who took delivery recently.

I tried very hard to like it from the pics - no go. I waited to see it in person and was less inspired. Will stick with the GTS and look for another toy from another manufacturer - no big deal

This thread should be moved to the 812 part of the forum!

I think they did a great job to design the new one totally different to its predecessor because they couldn’t develop the NA engine any further.
Those who like it will buy the new one and those who don’t like it will stay with the 812.

    That’s it!

The customers will vote with their wallet.

If you don’t like it don’t worry and be happy with your 812.

From that logic, why even chat on this forum at all?

Suppose we could all just sit in silence and wait to read the sales figures in their quarterly investor results and let the sales figures substitute for our opinions.

No, because of the title there’s no consideration of the new design in this thread unfortunately.
For example “pros and cons of the 12 Cilindri design” would lead to a more balanced discussion than a collection of negative responses.
That’s why I suggested to move (and not delete) this self-help group for future 812 owners to the 812 part of the forum [emoji4]

Don’t take me too seriously - just the two cents of someone who just sold his 812 because the perfectly specced 12C will be delivered in the first quarter of 2025.
