    Guys,

You will see from my history (20+ years now) that I have owned and sold both a 328 and 512TR (selling them was the biggest mistake ever)

I desperately want to hop back into the 512TR pond but have a question before I do.

The 512TR that I previously owned was a 94 with the upgraded diff, I now have my eye on a '92.

Does anyone have an idea of the cost of upgrading a '92 TR to a forged diff. There are some posts on Fchat, but they they are all pre-covid and I know prices have increased.

    Any insight is much appreciated.

    Thank you

You have to pull the motor. So do it at your first belt service. The diffs are around 4k pulling motor 7-8 k

I believe you can change the diff with engine in place. Is easier with engine out.

for sure it is not easier to change the diff when the engine is inside. only time you save is putting the engine out and in again. but to change the diff it is much easier to do this job when the engine is out and also the gearbox separated from the engine.

My goal (assuming I am successful in my purchase) would be to send the car out for a major, and as part of it, an upgrade to the diff and a few other key components that occurred in the later model 512TRs

Has anyone had any experience with shops that do this?

I get it would be just easier to buy a '94TR or M, but I prefer non-red and that limits available options.

    Thanks again

What color? I went the other route, and bought a red Swiss model 1994 and painted it blue.

71veedub - i have thought about going that route as well (i.e. repainting). Do you mind sharing about what that cost to repaint a TR and what year you did it (I will build in inflation based on how long ago)

    Thank you

It's going to be around 10K give or take a little with an independent shop.

I am afraid of the quality shops dong a complete and thorough job of a major and differential install it will be quite a bit more that that. Lets just say no shop giving me a 10 grand estimate would be allowed to touch mine.

I guess I'm still in the last decade, so what is the real cost of this fix-upgrade these days?

I think we need to price two ways - one while you are doing a engine out vs not doing an engine out -

also it is important to know is how many miles the gearbox has. I think it would make sense to clean the complete gearbox, so put all parts out, check the synchros, the gears, the bearings. may be you will find some what you not like.
but if you like to change the diff with engine inside the car - I not would do this if I would not know all other is ok

I am very happy to discuss it with any bona fide customer who comes to my shop with a TR.
