Assuming you had a non-GPF 812 … you’re going to really really miss the sound compared to the 12C … and there’s nothing really great that you’re getting in the 12C to offset that loss … which is part of the problem
You’re right, the GPF fitted 812 GTS owners are crying pretty loud here. Btw where did you hear the 12C up to 9500 rpm in the flesh? Gesendet von iPad mit FerrariChat
I haven’t heard it in person, but Ferrari themselves stated a top decibel level of around 75 or 78 for the 12C… which is a huge difference compared to Non GPF 812.
The lower volume is not a great sign. But, it's hard to sum up sound quality with one number. For one thing, that measure could be misleading if it's based on a very specific set of conditions needed to satisfy European noise regulations. And besides, while high volume may be correlated to good engine and exhaust sounds, I don't think it's intrinsic to good sound quality. Perhaps Ferrari has worked some magic to adhere to the regulations without sacrificing the emotion that glorious engine can elicit. I share your worry, but it's possible. And I think that's @Dubaicity's point - we should withhold judgment until we've heard the car ourselves, in person, from inside and outside the car. I suppose that's fair.
Oh, I don’t doubt for a second the tonal quality of Ferrari’s NA V12. It IS magnificent!! Plus, nowadays the factory’s aim is to pipe the sound inside of the cabin. So, there’s only one question left to answer really. How will the car sound from the outside?
100 % agree! I trust Ferrari - maybe too much - that they created something special again regarding the handling of the car what is most important for me. The 812 was the basis of lots of cars, the SPs, One ofs and even the Purosangue AFAIK. Why should Ferrari develop a whole new chassis with a shorter wheel base when they could create just another modificata with putting a new designed top on the 812 basis? That makes financially no sense and we all know that finances are more important than passion for the company nowadays. It’s not all about horsepower, noise level, track and drag race results when creating an outstanding GT car. So I’m pretty excited about the first official testings of the 12C and my own impressions of the handling. Driving lots of miles with my 812 in the last years makes me capable of comparing. The only thing I’m wondering about is why there’s no information about the driving skills in the moment except 0-60 and Vmax. Is it because they do the fine tuning in the moment or is it because they realized that the new one is not significantly better than its predecessor? Time will tell. Here is a snapshot of my personal impression compared to the 812: Pros - modified engine - independent 4 wheel steering - different and fresh design - bigger wheels (just the size not the design) - the car looks less bulky sitting inside - interior design of the tunnel and the doors - bigger screens for navigation and music control - Burmester sound system - wireless charger (it will be one of my daily cars) Cons - quieter exhaust (which is a stupid EU regulation) - touch buttons - surcharge base price Gesendet von iPad mit FerrariChat
We can’t judge about the sound until some drive test will be done . I have owned a non gpf 812 and GTS. Personally I prefer the sound of the gts because at low rpm the car is louder imho. The 12c probably will be more silent but if the sound inside the cabin will be more satisfying than an 812 maybe this will engage us more when driving this new car . Time will tell….. lower volume doesn’t mean worst quality sound.
Well, I must say that I absolutely, positively, without a doubt or reservation, love it, love it, love it! 1,000% YES! I appreciate the masterful blending of a bold new look with a celebration and deep reverence of historical Ferrari styling cues… Long live the glorious NA 12Cilindri!Gianmaria Fulgenzi, I salute you and your team! Cheers!
Even if our opinions differ here and there, I think your perspective is wonderful. Can't wait to hear your thoughts once you've had some real seat time with the 12C. I hope you love it!
Like you I have owned both and still have the GTS (which I wont sell). I have driven both cars "super hard" and in all conditions and just really feel super comfortable in the GTS in terms of performance, sound looks etc etc. 12C I have not "bonded" with as yet - who knows maybe after a test drive I may change my mind.
12 Cilindri is not really wider than 812. Front track has increased by 14 mm, making the front now as wide as the rear. The maximum width (without mirrors) is 36 mm wider though, but this seems to be explained entirely by the addition of chrome lists behind the front wheels. I don't know mirror to mirror width of 812, so can't say if that dimension has increased.
Having owned a preGPF812SFand a GTS the sound of the preGPF car was superior at high revs whereas the GTS is lower in tone and louder at startup and low revs- think American V-8 vs the Ferrari signature mellifluous shriek . If the 12C pipes the shriek into the cabin great. As much as I love pulling into a restaurant parking lot and someone inside asks me “is that a Ferrari V12 I heard?” But I’ll be fine without it if the car sounds phenomenal from the drivers seat. Do I love the looks of the car? Looks are subjective and my first impression is no (especially the coupe)but I’ll wait to see it in person. The price is off putting since its performance is unlikely to exceed my GTS and the ergonomics are not significantly improved. We’ll see when the in depth reviews come out. I've seen it up close and in person and yup...I really, really do not like this design at all. Ferrari needs to undo it's divorce with Pininfarina ASAP. The Resto-Mod 550 looks light years better by comparison. Of the two versions the spider looks better- maybe it’s the wheels Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I agree. For me, the wheels certainly help (or more accurately, hurt in the case of the coupe). But the bigger deal is the ungainly black wedge at the back of the coupe. It's more integrated than on the spider where the black bits seem like an afterthought. But it's also more conspicuous, and unflattering to my eyes. It looks forced and it makes the rear of the car appear enormous and bulbous. Frankly, the nose isn't growing on me either. The car really looks great from some angles - generally those that draw less attention to the black bits.
Manzoni quoted in Aug/Sept R&T saying it was inspired by sci-fi comics. Makes sense as the design is a joke.
Manzoni didn't spare on pretentious words and ideas when he talked about the 12 Cilindry with R&T. I can't resist reproducing what this man who thinks he's enlightened said. “The idea in the 12 Cilindri was also to avoid this typical anthropomorphic effect of a face—two eyes, one mouth, and so “Connecting these elements, you have immediately a completely different effect, which is closer to a spaceship than to a face or to an animal.” “The main idea was to draw inspiration from the future. So, to make something which is absolutely pure in terms of volume and the shape, but at the same time very, very modern.” “These flaps are aeronautics inspired,” “It’s even better when you take a picture with the iPhone, than making official pictures, because the car must be seen in the proper habitat, in the proper situation, and especially in motion,” present.”on,” In the past, one of Manzoni's hobbies was designing spaceships and so it's no surprise that he is currently obsessed with science fiction and aeronautics. Manzoni said that it’s even better when you take a picture of the 12 C with the iphone than making official pictures. I think it's exactly the opposite because all the pictures I've seen so far of the 12 C taken with an iPhone IMO don't show an appealing car. The only pictures in which the 12 C appears more seducing are the official ones taken from angles that our eyes most probably will never see in real life.
Looks nothing like an Aston ‘the 550 looks more Ferrari than . Anything done today. Bring back the iconic circular tailights
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I’d say Manzoni accomplished his mission. The 12C definitely has a spaceship vibe. Unfortunately, it seems that most aeronautically-influenced cars from the 1950’s haven’t aged so well. Like the big fins on the landbarge Caddies of the time. I wish Manzoni was more interested in timeless and elegant.
Some architects and some designers tend to think they will change the shape of humanity through their enlightened visions. They close their eyes and see themselves standing while they transcend beyond mere mortal beings. They should read this forum.
