I just recently purchased a 458 Italia. It seems that the transmission is very rough in shifting between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd. When in manual, at what RPM should I be shifting into the next gear to avoid the abrupt jerkiness of the transmission?

I have a 2015 458 Spider and when I first purchased the vehicle mentioned the same "rough/jerky shifting" to my Ferrari dealer Sr. Tech. I was told that this is normal and due to the tight tolerances of the 7 speed Dual Clutch trans. When I drive in manual mode I normally shift in the 4-5k range, where possible. That is sometimes hard to do in traffic and when shifting at lower RPM, I get the "jerky" shifts. For longer drives I have learned to love Auto mode. I never thought I would say that but Auto mode does smooth the shifting dramatically. This is my experience.

Are you in Race mode? The bumps are programmed in. Is this what you are are feeling? Try Sport mode. I also have found smooth downshifting requires your foot on the brake. At the end of the day, it is not a Porsche PDK. The F8 fixed this.

The bumps are normal. Some cars seem to do it a little more than others for some reason.
In Race mode, the bumps are more aggressive as well.

Why would anyone be shifting in the 4-5k mark in a Ferrari when you've got 9k of rev range to play with?

If you mean when driving through town etc I've never personally noticed much jerkiness when short shifting, but putting it in Auto for "in-town" driving would probably resolve this.

Some are definitely harsher than others. My 458 had a very firm kick when driving gently, from 1st to 2nd gear and shifting at about 3-4k RPM's

The bumps can be programmed away with a tune. Common. It will never be a PDK but you can come close.

What exactly do you mean by rough gear changes? Especially when you use f1 pedals, a slight tapping sensation is normal, as you go to higher rpms, this tapping becomes more sporty and increases driving pleasure. In short, you need to drive enough to understand whether what you call tapping is something inherent in the system.

Its not an easy tapping. It is more in the nature of a violent jerk when shifting between 1st and 2nd. I just wasnt sure if increasing the RPM's would help. I hope it is just a programming issue

It sounds normal. My 458 is the same way for the most part, and others on here report the same. Its part of the allure, imo.

You are shifting wrong! There is only one way to make her shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd gear in race mode. You must accelerate more while shifting, give her more gas when you flick the paddle!
