After a year and half of having my car at the shop I finally picked it up. I just wish I didnt pick it up on the trailer and parts in the box. When I purchased the car initially I knew I needed an overhall on the trans. It had a bad whine in 3-5. I sourced a spare trans from a member here and hoped it would be an easy job now having two boxes to get me one good one back in the car. Long story short, I have the car home, both boxes on the bench and debating my next move. Take the time to rebuild it myself, the time which I do not have right now but the choice I probably should take. Or the second is finding someone who actually knows these boxes and how to do the job correctly. Its hard to find good people to do good work anymore. Anyone know a reputable trans rebuilder in the mid west for these?
Why limit yourself to the Midwest? Box up the parts and ship them to the best guy in the world. Include Italy in your search.
I respect your enthusiasm and perhaps your wallet, but I dont operate quite on the ship it to Italy budget and mentality. I really am the build it myself type, but am neck deep in home addition/renovation work right now and need to keep focused on that. I am willing to ship it anywhere in the US. I would love to for once be able to have someone else do some work for me.
The plan was always to just put the number 2 trans in there. I was trying to get it inspected first before putting it in. Shop supposedly did that, I put it in, and it was stuck in gear and unable to shift through any gears. I gave the shop the opportunity to get it sorted but it never happened. Thus the position now, I know box one is in bad shape, but box 2 is essentially good to the best of my knowledge, as far as gears, bearings etc but something in the assembly of the box got screwy and needs to be looked over. It just seems like something is binding up right now and not moving smoothly. My first assumption is 4-5 syncro or shift fork/linkage as that is not moving smoothly like the rest. I'll give pocono a call and see what they say. Thanks for the suggestion!
Pocono is a good idea if they're close and have availability Competizione & Sports Cars (Gaithersburg MD) did my 348 gearbox when it imploded.
