Design Milk is an online magazine dedicated to modern design offering the latest updates in art, architecture, interior design, furniture and decor, fashion, and technology.

During the presentation of the 12 C in Miami Sci-Fi, architecture and furniture were evoked by Flavio Manzoni an they made an article with the title - The New Ferrari 12 Cilindri Design Is a Nod to the Optimism of the 1970s Sci-Fi.

When describing the 12 C Design Milk wrote “……Things get a bit more radical as you make your way around to the rear of the 12Cilindri, where a large graphic rear hatch window simmers with retro-futuristic vibes of a spacecraft or an astronaut’s visor. Those sci-fi evocations are no mistake, with Ferrari making it a point to highlight the connection during the event with a collage of concept sketches alongside stills from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and other science fiction films, an era of storytelling defined by modernist optimism colliding against the technological challenges of the future.”

“…..But Manzoni would bristle upon mention of the design’s “retro” elements. Instead, Ferrari’s chief designer emphasizes the everlasting modernity and optimism represented by futurist 1960s and 1970s architecture, furniture, and industrial design – and in turn, the 12Cilindri – a moment when everything seemed possible and good design inhabited corners of our homes outward into the deep recesses of galaxies far, far away.”

Do we have to agree with this manner of communication that goes to the extreme of evoking Stanley Kubrik's, 2001 A Space Odyssey and the good architecture and furniture design of the 1960s and 1970s to justify the grandeur of Manzoni's latest creation ?

I don't think so and although I don't have any authority to give advices to Flavio Manzoni, if I could tell him just one thing I would say: “Flavio, is not an elaborate and somewhat pompous narrative that will enhance and make your designs better. Simplify, don't say anything, and let each of us decide if your designs are good or not”

It's all marketing, promotion and the usual sales blabla, nothing more.
If one has to explain design, then something is wrong.
The end product should speak for itself, in this case, it really does.......

So Manzoni is invited to present his work with the 12C and a pompous magazine commentator advises him “better to say nothing”. And you all think that’s smart? Wonder what the punters would have said if he had stood up and proclaimed “Here’s a picture of the 12C, make up your own mind. Thank you for inviting me, Ciao”. Can I have my money back is the most likely response. How pathetic.

And as for it being marketing, of course it is. The most clever kind. It’s basically free and for effect it’s far above a magazine spread or a segment on TV. It is smart thinking. Or do you think Ferrari should be arrogant - something you always criticise Ferrari for - and simply say “we don’t need to try, people will buy into our brand because we’re Ferrari. Manzoni, stay at home and save the plane fare”?

And how about the magazine? Would they have printed “Ferrari showed a picture of the 12C and asked us to make up our mind” as a full article? I literally can’t believe how sanctimonious that response is. A smart guy makes a big effort, which helps them sell their magazine and they say he shouldn’t have bothered! And you all think the magazine’s right?! Laughing here.

I remember the way new Ferraris were presented to the world in the days of Montezemolo. The stage was set up in Geneva with the models covered and the press and public crowded around the entire perimeter of the venue. Invariably, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo appeared with his characteristic elegance, gave a structured presentation of the new car and finally the covers were removed, ending the speeches and the entire show-off. From that moment on, the only center of attention were the cars on display, which began to speak for themselves and both Manzoni and other senior Ferrari officials remained close by, but in the background, their role being basically to clarify and answer questions. which were normally formulated to them by the specialized press, dealer representatives and customers and guests.

What happened in Miami is a very different way of showing a new Ferrari and I prefer the old fashion one.

Add to list of strikes against 12C: Per new EU law, must include invasive govt-mandated speed-warning devices.

We all know Ferrari is trotting out Manzoni and others to basically do a “I know you guys don’t like the car … but let me just tell you where we were going with it … now hear me out” LOL

I was also invited for a private preview a few weeks ago and made them turn the engine on. Can’t say that the sound was disappointing but of course it was limited to a crank and idle vs anything more.

Uh no. Best exhaust note in the business.

Modern Ferrari exhausts suck. Watched my 812 and Vanq II drive by the garage during back to back inspections. Not even close. Terrible. It's the engine noise what makes the V12 great, not the exhaust.

It seems that we live in a society that has become risk averse and in this regard someone said: “This is how civilizations decline. They quit taking risks. And when they quit taking risks, their arteries harden. Every year there are more referees and fewer donors.” Interestingly, Elon Musk, the man who uttered these words, is the same one who put Tesla in the lobby of electric car manufacturers who are currently making pressure on the EU given the great risk, for them, that the previous end date for the commercialization of new vehicles with ICE in 2035, will be extended to a later date by the new majority political group in the European parliament.

In this logic of risk aversion and in relation to future cars with speed warning and control, what I think will happen is that current vehicles will be more desireble and therefore more valued in the future. It seems to me that something similar will happen with existing V12 GT Ferraris as well. Faced with a new model in this segment whose performance is similar to the previous one, whose sound is inferior to that of the past and whose design appears dubious and controversial and in view of Ferrari's new stylistic direction, the attitude that seems to be the most sensible for many of us is not taking any risks. That means preserving the models from the past that we like and enjoy, as everything indicates that they will be the glories of an era that has definitely ended.

Maybe more desirable ....... but governments and politicians, especially in the EU, continue to undertake every effort to completely forbid ICE cars, all of them, even the already existing ones.
There's huge risk for that happening as a next step, they want everybody to use EV's only.
When will people finally wake up?

Agree I saw in NYC about a month ago, was shocked at how elegant and muscular at the same time in the bronze model I saw. Told that it will be 500K specced.
