i bought my 92 512tr from the main dealer Samocar in Rome in 1999. then i moved to London, and in order to get insurance for the car at that time, it had to be fitted with an immobilizer. so i had a local place (cannot remember where) fit a Cobra brand immobilizer, which came with two fobs, and served also to lock and unlock the doors. by some strange miracle, these fobs still work.... however, the rubber dongles on these two fobs have denatured and fallen apart. so now i have to walk around with the fob loose and separate from the key, which is annoying. and furthermore, i question how much longer they will work, and if they fail and i am left stranded somewhere, that wont be good. so i am contemplating having the whole system removed - but i do like the idea of the immobilizer since it works quite well - some thieves tried to steal it once and were unsuccessful, and only managed to bugger the locks which means i no longer have the original keys or locks since they were replaced by the dealer in Geneva with a key set from a 550 i think. and furthermore i do not remember the original locking system on the car - did it have a remote lock/unlock fob? did it just work with the key ? can you guys tell me what systems you have and make some suggestions? edit, i just looked up cobra and they still make the systems and have replacement dongles !!!!! i might just get those and keep on with the same system.... suggestions still sought though in case there are better ideas out there.
The Cobra system is pretty common since as you note some Euro countries require it for insurance. Driver's side lock locks/unlocks both sides with the key.
ah thanks for that. so i can just use the key if the cobra fails. i am calling cobra tomorrow so get the new dongles sent.
well surprisingly, this set has lasted 25 years! i cannot believe the batteries are still going ! anyway, just ordered the replacement fobs. i hope they give instructions on how to switch the guts over.
