This guy most likely just used filters, but I haven’t seen the update. I am in communication with one of the gentlemen in Japan with the Matsu-spec build. There’s only a handful of owners who’ve made the plunge. For most of us. Take spec would be most ideal. If I ever do go this route, I would visit Toda’s facility personally to make sure I understand the whole process. I have a Motec tuner here. @INTMD8 is also a great tuner and engine builder. The build I'm planning, which has yet to start with the actual car purchase, is definitely with the Matsu spec engine. It will be a mix of track and street, even it's a bit growly with 'normal' driving.
I'm based in New Zealand, so we have 98 at the pump. In saying that, I'm thinking I'll most likely have this car based in Europe so that during the New Zealand winter I'll head up there for summer track days, and from what I've been told there is fuel at the pumps to cater for such an engine.
Well if you haven’t already bought the car, my advice would be to look for a 2.7. Both Rosso Corsa cars mention above are actually 5.2 cars and not real challenge cars.

96RON = 92 at the pump in U.S roughly. In California, highest we can conveniently get is 91, so we probably need to go 11.5:1 to be on the safe side. The lowest Toda has is 12.0:1.

I was looking at that, but figuring that as I'm likely to be changing the ECU, the engine set-up etc, it may not matter that much which one to go for as a base. Much like getting an F1 as it's a cheaper base potentially, and put in a race peddle box....provenance is of no concern to me at all.
Air routes to the intakes differently on a 5.2. It is less effective than 2.7 in real world driving, hence owner of this 5.2 Toda car had to go this route. *I still don’t think it results better than 2.7 cold air route to the boxes. Second reason is 2.7 comes with bigger injectors good up to 450 hp @ roughly 90-95% duty cycle. My bet is “385 Challenge” isn’t making the full 450hp with 5.2’s smaller injectors and also getting less cold air in real world. The Toda 5.2 Berlinetta with challenge-like suspension and weight reduction mods is just about as fast as a stock 2.7 355 challenge (with cats still in place) on Suzuka Circuit. If going Matsu, one would need upgraded injectors. I haven’t seen reports of reliable upgraded injectors made for the 355. The RMCMiami car had upgraded injectors… but it also had tuning issues. I was contacted to help find a tuner. Probably the reason the owner in Japan sold it so quickly after he had just built it. This is all speculation on my part, but my hunches tend to be close to reality . At this stage, it seems like starting off with 2.7 is a safer bet. Toda should be able to give direction on the injectors, as I would have thought if the OEM injectors were not up to the task, they would supply the ones they recommend with the kit. Having those filter socks on the trumpets doesn't look like a good fix at all, you would have all sorts of heat-soak issues.
Details of their kit is posted on their site. Injectors are not included. OE Injectors are up to task up to Take Spec if you have OE 2.7 injectors. I would send them an email to inquire.
Toda was always known as one of the highest quality Honda builders. They were one of the first companies to make a dedicated camshaft that eliminated the low rpm VTEC mechanism. It would run a large cam at all times because in racing, the low rpm cam was of course not necessary.
The more I think about it, the more I think 12.0:1 CR might be too aggressive for our pump fuel. 11.5:1 is probably a better bet. Those would need to come from Iding Power.
CR should be matched to the cam timing and fuel available, but the gains from 11.5 to 12:1 are extremely minimal so not worth any effort to do imo. Even in a flat out race engine, it's a couple HP at most.
