Had my heat exchanger fail and is being repaired. The Indy quoted me $4k for the job. I bought the AW Italia exchanger which they say is a better than the oem but each time we place on the car, the hose connectors have come off. So now we are looking to placing the oem exchanger on.

has anyone had any issues replacing the heat exchanger and is it a $4k job?

I bought and installed one from AW Italian last year using the original hoses and it is fine. No leaks.

I left the intake manifold in place, working from front and rear, by removing the water pump. Not terribly difficult but a pain because of the cramped up working space. A Ferrari Chatter posted the way he did it.

4k seems a bit high but maybe the mechanic feels like the intake manifold must be removed and he is including the time for multiple flushes?

I did mine a few years ago. I did remove the manifold though, painted it and replaced all the runner gaskets and a few coolant hoses while I was in there. Was also a ton of debris in there I cleaned out. Almost seems worth it to remove the manifold to me due to the age of the runner gaskets and the ease of access to the heat exchanger once you are in there.

Did mine as precautionary work a couple years ago. Paid about 3,500 plus parts to not have to experience this type of fun.

Seems like so many people have these go. Do the new ones also fail at the same rate?

Mine was replaced in 2001 but now I’m wondering how often I shouldn’t change this proactively.

Update from this, so for the third time the boots have come off the new exchanger. It has come off three times when we hit 8500 rpm the boot comes off and coolant everywhere. Seems something isn't being done correctly as this can't be possible to have happened 3 times.

Sounds to me like either the boot isn't tight enough on the heat exchanger or your coolant pressure is through the roof. I would lean to the former.

When I first installed mine I thought it was tight, but it leaked all over. So we tightened the ever loving **** out of it and it has been fine for going on 7 years.

I had my intake off (gasket replacement) and proactively changed out the exchanger while everything was accessible. Sourced the exchanger from Ricambi, already had new boots from a collection of parts bought a while back. It’s been solid, no leaks.

Could your cooling system be over pressurizing?

    *edit*
@imahorse had the pressure thought as well. Since it’s happened multiple times, I’d be willing to bet they’ve cranked down the clamps.

New boots and new clamps. I bought a used set that looked great when I installed mine. Did the install myself with intake removal. If I didn't **** up the lines with making them fit it would have been shorter time period. Clamps can only be installed one way, turn until the metal ends meet each other.

We just ordered stock boots and new stock gaskets. Let's see what happened. The exchanger we originally used with the Aliferrari heat exchanger kit. So now we will see.

Wouldn't then the coolant hoses come off too?

No, he simply went in there and tightened the snot out of the installed hose clamps. It has been my experience that the Ferrari hoses need a very tight clamp force, all of them on all models.

Update, last week I spoke to the shop and lost some faith when I asked them when they thought the car would be ready, and they couldn't give me a date after they have had the car for over four months. So I decided to pull the car still un repaired with a $6k bill and cut my loses and having the car sent to a new indie shop in the morning that claim to have more experience with 360's.
So hope that the new shop works out! But something had to be done and didn't want to be in limbo like this. But $6k...... sheeesh..... that hurts.

$6k for changing the heat exchanger 4 times and all four times the exchanger hoses came off. He was going in for the fifth time and I stopped it and sent to another shop.

When the heat exchanger was replaced, were the hoses replaced as well? I have found that some new hoses have a very loose fit on the heat exchanger, and elected to use the original hoses when I replaced the exchanger.

The end of the heat exchanger has a bead that should fit tightly into a groove that is molded on the inside of the hose. It almost doesn't need the hose clamps. I can't imagine the boot blowing off it it has the correct fit.

Make sure you get all of your old/original parts when you pick up your car in order to check the fit of the cooler boots/hoses

Yes, I had paid $3k but then as he went in again to fix it he wanted to compensated again although it wasn't fix. Then he would release the car if the new balance wasn't paid to an additional $3k.
