Sorted 360 or accident 458

What does "damaged" mean, precisely? And do you plan on selling it in the future?

A parking lot fender bender is a lot different from "lost a corner and the airbags deployed" or "Chi è il comandante del sottomarino?"

My California T has 2 low-speed accidents on the books, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it mechanically. Buying a damaged car with no intent to sell meant I can get something a model newer and much nicer overall than what I could "afford" by normal measures.

 

Just a FYI. I had a accident in my F430. This was a 50k repair. It doesn't take much to reach 50K to repair these things.

Have you driven a 360 and a 458? Just curious if you know that you actually like either car.

If it were my money, I'd buy the 360. Unless I am misreading, you're looking at $20K more PLUS another 60K in repairs for the 458, minimum? Or is the 458 already fixed?

 

55k is nothing nowadays to fix a 458. Test drive it if you can, offer 10k less and enjoy it if it drives good. Drive a clean 458 before if you can..

 

Ah. Then have a PPI done at some place unrelated to the seller and if it looks OK go for it. Just be aware that the next buyer of your car will have the same questions.

And I own a 458 Spider- FWIW- and previously owned a 360F1- had it been gated I would still have it -

 

$118K USD for a clean gated 360? Unless it has a gazillion miles, that seems like a good place to plunk down your money, assuming it's the car you really want. Drive it for a year, if you're not still in love with it you're not going to lose much if anything selling it. And it won't take you long to find a buyer for that car.

The 458? I have not driven one so I can't say about the value delta over the 360. But I do know you'll have a much harder time selling that car and it's probably still a depreciating asset.

If it was me I'd take a long drive in both cars, same course if possible (if you haven't already) and decide based on the test drive, leavening it with your willingness to deal with a "stories" vs "no stories" car when you decide to sell.

i have both a 458 and a gated 360. i like the 458 more. It's more responsive and a little less of a nuisance to deal with. i also think it looks better.

the only thing about the 360 i like frankly is the gated transmission.

 

One drives more like a classic car, the other drives more like a modern car. Apples to Oranges to me. One feels sporty and quick enough, the other feels fast. Re-selling a crashed Ferrari sounds like no fun to me. Depending where you live there might be property tax advantages of the 360, and insurance will probably be cheaper. I think there's too many personal factors on this one. Only you can decide.

 

A great gated manual 360 coupe (or spider) will be soon outpacing the 458 coupe/spider in terms of value.

The 360 is so much more fun to drive, in my opinion. Heck, I'd rather have a good manual 360 than my old 458 Speciale. Unless you're on the track, you won't be using much of the 458's potential.

I agree with the posters above that the 360 will hold its value longer, and be a classic ride. That's important if you need to sell later.

The 458, if it's anything like the CaliT, is a modern car with amenities like actual working AC and a nice transmission. I've been amazed how good the modern Ferrari is simply as a car (not just a SPORTSCAR!!!!1!one!). But with the modern car comes the DCT, so make sure you're aware of the potential costs there.

I can tell you that of the hundreds of Ferrari owners I've met over the years, none of the conversations included the phrase "does your car have a damage title?" I can also tell you that there's a LOT of Ferraris that get repaired using cash and a distinct lack of records.

 

IMHO , if you buy a 458 spend a few more dollars and buy one that has no stories . Good luck hunting.

 

Id always buy a 360 over a 458

 

The gated 360 is a special car that is classic and you'd be buying at the bottom of the market. They are old though and will need love frequently with hoses, belts, etc. Things that are just going to wear out with age. The 458 isn't at it's bottom dollar, I'd imagine it will still depreciate and a wrecked one is always harder to sell and convince someone that it's solid and repaired properly, especially if you don't put many miles on it and end up selling it. Most will assume it's because it's been issue after issue and you're sick of it so you're trying to get out of it. All that said, if you keep it and you're convinced it's repaired and sorted then you can benefit from the cheaper price tag now and own one. It will absolutely be faster than the 360 and should have things that work better and longer but also when things do need work it will typically be more expensive and harder to work on. The 360 is pretty bare. It's relatively easy to work on and you can do a lot yourself if you're mechanically inclined. It will also feel like a different experience driving it over the 458. That is all personal preference though and requires your opinion behind the wheel of both. With any Ferrari maintenance is key. The more you take care of it the more you reap those rewards later. I can tell you whoever is selling the 458, if they have an interested buyer, is probably crossing their fingers because it's so much harder to move one that's had damage so that can work in your favor for an offer if they've had it and get feeling a little desperate.
